The Marvels Movie Review 2023

The Marvels is the latest Marvel movie that was released on November 10, 2023. It’s part of phase five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), following Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, and we’re here to share what we think about the entire movie. We had the opportunity to watch this in the theater, so that experience gave us a better chance to enjoy the movie, unlike when it’s watched on Disney Plus.

Unfortunately, for this movie, there was a lot of negative news about it, calling it the biggest flop of the MCU movies. So, we’re here to share our review of this movie. But first, you have to know that this movie is still new, it is yet to be made available on streaming platforms such as Disney+ or Sling TV. So if you want to watch it, you’ll need to head over to your nearest movie theater. Let’s start.

Plot

The plot is about Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, who defied and destroyed the Supreme Intelligence, which led to a Kree civil war and the destruction of Hala. The conflict began when the new leader of Kree, Dar-Benn, retrieved one of the Quantum Bands. When she wore the band, it created an anomaly that was shortly discovered by the intelligence force called S.W.O.R.D. Then, they sent Monica Rambeu to check it out.

When she touched the anomaly, she, Carol Danvers, and Kamala Khan suddenly switched places via teleportation. They realize that this issue keeps happening when they use their superpowers at the same time. So, they need to retrieve the Quantum Band from Dar-Benn since the latter is rupturing the jump points, which makes their network unstable and causes the superpower issue.

Dar-Benn destroyed the planet Tarnax shortly after The Marvels arrived to rescue the colony. Then, they went to planet Aladna, where she asked for help from Prince Yan to protect the planet, to which the latter agreed. But the real fight is yet to begin. When the three Marvels were trying to restrict Dar-Benn, she was able to steal Kamala’s band and use it to create another hole in space. Unfortunately, that power was enough to create a rupture in the multiverse.

Carol, Kamala, and Monica worked together to close the hole by combining the power of Kamala and Carol to energize Monica and close the hole on the other side.

The Cast’s Performance

The cast’s acting was good. There wasn’t really anything special to what they showed in this film. If you were able to watch Captain Marvel in the theaters, Disney+, or even Dish TV, Brie Larson was the same as when she filmed Captain Marvel, so there’s nothing noteworthy to mention. However, we really liked the comedic addition of Kamala Khan’s family, especially her mom. It was a typical Indian-American comedy, so there wasn’t anything extravagant, but it was really funny.

In the entire film, what we think brought the film together is Iman Vellani with her awkward stints and the typical teenage fangirling over meeting her idol. Iman Vellani’s portrayal of Kamala Khan was refreshing and authentic.

Park Seo-joon’s Screen Time

Many people were disappointed with the limited screen time given to Park Seo-joon, who plays Prince Yan in the movie. Despite being a prominent name in the cast, his role seemed somewhat overshadowed by the main trio of Marvels. Seo-joon’s character, while crucial to the plot, didn’t get enough development or depth, which made his fans a bit disappointed since he was really highlighted when they were advertising the film.

Park Seo-joon is a popular Korean actor who starred in many Korean dramas like Imitation Class, Fight for My Way, What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, and She Was Pretty. He’s a great actor, so if you’re planning to give his TV series a go, make sure to watch it with a stable internet connection, whether you have DSL, fiber, or satellite internet.

Conclusion

Overall, it’s still a good watch. It wasn’t as bad as many have said in the reviews you’ll find online, but there’s nothing special to it. It was a simple movie, but it was entertaining. If you’re planning to watch it, you’ll get your money’s worth, but it’s probably not something that you’d want to watch over and over again like other MCU movies.
