‘Avatar’ Remains the Highest Grossing Film Ever

Avatar Remains On Top

After being ranked the highest-grossing film of all time 12 years ago to having the title snatch away by the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, James Cameron’s masterpiece Avatar has once again managed to reclaim its title.

How?

Well, China has re-issued the classic film which resulted in estimated earnings of $8.9 million. This managed to close the earnings gap of $7.82 million between the two films. Avatar has now earned $2.802 billion while Avengers: Endgame trails behind with $2.797 billion. Regardless of the time period, these two films have managed to keep audiences entertained to the point where the earnings have soared through the roof.

While Avatar was released in 2009, China only released the film in 2010, earning approximately $203 million.

James Cameron remains at the top regardless

Before Avatar took over the movie world, Cameron was able to secure the highest-grossing film in 1997 with the release of Titanic. Re-releases of the film assisted it in achieving this status, however, it was no match for Avatar.

The Avenger: Endgame difference

While Titanic and Avatar were able to generate additional revenue through re-releases, Avengers: Endgame was able to do so in the space of a year. The film featured a star-studded cast that included Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth.

Although Avengers: Endgame broke records in such a short space of time, the fact that older movies are still able to generate revenue so many years after their initial release is a testament to the relevance of the production.

For example, Avatar tackles climate change and deforestation. It looks at how we’re putting our relationship with nature at risk as we try to build a better world for ourselves. While critics had slammed the film for being too simple, it was this simplicity that made it so relatable.

The future of Avatar

Cameron is currently working on the sequel after experiencing COVID-19 related production delays. Filming is currently taking place in New Zealand and has remained unaffected as that nation successfully manages the spread of the global pandemic. While production is ongoing, the releases date of the much-anticipated film is December 2022.

As the world eagerly awaits the sequel and we spend the time hoping to win playing online, we can only assume that the first movie will become increasingly popular as we count down the days to the release of the sequel.

A movie that resonates with the world

Simply put, Avatar can easily attribute its success to the simple storyline that touches on current global conditions. As our world battles to take control of climate change, the storyline becomes all the more relevant, potentially increasing the likeability of the already popular film. We can only hope that Avatar 2 is able to live up to the expectations created by the original movie.
