An “unmissable” (David Fear, Rolling Stone) film comes home when Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love arrives on Digital October 1 and on DVD October 15 from Lionsgate. An official 2019 selection at the Sundance Film Festival, Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love chronicles the beautiful, yet tumultuous, love story of the legendary Leonard Cohen and his muse Marianne Ihlen, which inspired Cohen to write classics like “So Long, Marianne.” Directed by award-winning filmmaker and personal friend of Marianne, Nick Broomfield (Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, Whitney: Can I Be Me), the film features Leonard Cohen, Marianne Ihlen, and commentary from Oscar® nominee Judy Collins (1974, Best Documentary, Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman, with producer Jill Godmilow), and Helle Goldman (Bright Nights). “Incredible, remarkable, fantastic…a powerful love story that spans decades” (Chris Gore, Film Threat), the Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $19.99.

Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love is renowned filmmaker Nick Broomfield’s most personal and romantic film of his storied career. The documentary starts on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, where Leonard Cohen, then a struggling and unknown fiction writer, and Marianne Ihlen, a single mother with a young son, became part of a community of expat artists, writers, and musicians. Never-before-seen footage shot by Broomfield and legendary documentarian D.A. Pennebaker make for a unique portrait of an idyllic 1960’s bohemia. It was a time that left a lasting imprint on both Marianne and Leonard, whose friendship would last another fifty years before their deaths in 2016.
