A Comparison of Online Gaming and Traditional Gaming

Gaming in Contrast: The Differences Between Online and Traditional Gaming

Gaming has been a popular pastime for pretty much as long as the technology has existed. From playing the most basic games like Tetris and Snake on old-school devices to the advent of virtual and augmented reality that has now taken the world by storm, gaming has proliferated all over the world.

But as the Internet has been further developed and global accessibility has increased dramatically, online gaming has also become far more popular.

While online and traditional forms of gaming are similar in many regards, there are also several key aspects in which they differ. They may both offer a massive entertainment factor, but they each have a unique charm that sets them apart – as well as some major practical differences.

In this article, we’re going to delve into the main differences between online gaming and traditional gaming.

  1. Platform and Medium

The main, and most obvious, difference, of course, is that of the platform and medium. Online gaming, on the one hand, is predominantly conducted by means of the internet. Players can participate by means of mobile devices, gaming consoles, or computers that are connected via servers in order to interact with other players around in the world and play in virtual environments.

Traditional gaming, on the other hand, is a solo operation (that is, you’re playing alone, against yourself, in a sense). Or, if you want to play against other people, you all need to be in the same room and your devices (or controllers) need to be linked up.

  1. Variety of Different Games

With traditional gaming, you generally need an actual disk or something similar to be able to play the game, which limits your choices. However, when it comes to online, you can play anything you like with just the click of a button. You’ll find everything from MMOs to FPS and real money pokies games in their hundreds or even thousands.

  1. Social Aspect

Many people argue that online gaming provides the opportunity for more social interaction because you get to chat with other players you’re competing with and against. Sometimes, there are even chatrooms.

However, traditional gaming often tends to be something that people do alone, which can make it fairly anti-social. Although, having said that, it’s not necessarily a bad thing to do activities on your own. Of course, the other thing is that it is possible to play with other people if they’re present, so it doesn’t have to be anti-social at all.

  1. Accessibility

Online gaming can make many more games a lot more accessible than traditional gaming has allowed for in the past, because it’s a lot easier to access new and different games.

  1. Sense of Community

Online gaming has become quite well known for the fact that it offers results in the development of online communities. That is, players from all over the world who connect online via chat rooms and other means, creating a sense of belonging and community that isn’t really possible in traditional gaming – at least not in quite the same way.
