The Diary of Anne Frank

Human Lanterns

(1982 -- Hong Kong) Tony Liu, Kuan Tai Chen, Lieh Lo, Linda Chu. Though featuring the Shaw Brothers custom brand of martial arts mayhem, "Human Lanterns" also taps into the early 80s craze for the American slasher film and the earlier Hammer horrors by providing a grisly take on the serial killer feature in an inimitable Hong Kong style. When an unbalanced craftsman decides to get revenge on two Kung Fu masters by creating special lanterns constructed from the human skin of their dead relatives, all hell breaks loose in this gruesome tale of bloody retribution. Taking its inspiration from movies like "Psycho" and real cases like Ed Gein, "Human Lanterns" is clearly not for the faint-hearted with its over the top gore and sadistic qualities but this slice of darker than dark fantasy still manages to be both wonderfully horrible and impressively entertaining. All About Evil

Hotel Fear

The film follows three characters unknowingly sharing a supposedly empty Taipei apartment. The beautiful realtor May Lin (Yang Kuei-mei) brings her lover Ah-jung (Chen Chao-jung) to a vacant unit she has on the market, unaware that it is secretly being occupied by the suicidal funeral salesman Hsiao-kang (Lee Kang-sheng). The three cross paths in a series of precisely staged, tragicomic erotic encounters, but despite their physical proximity, they find themselves no closer to a personal connection. Featuring an intoxicating mix of Antonioni-esque longing and surprising deadpan humor, the film catapulted Tsai to the top of the international filmmaking world and earned him the prestigious Golden Lion at the 1994 Venice International Film Festival. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet: Seasons 1 and 2

(1952-53, 1953-54) Two four-disc sets, each with 39 episodes of the iconic series. For a record-breaking 14 seasons and 435 episodes, "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" aired on ABC-TV from 1952 through 1966, becoming one of the most cherished cultural touchstones of the 20th century. The positive, wholesome series epitomized an idyllic American 1950s lifestyle, its gentle humor brought to the screen by the real-life Nelson family: Ozzie and wife Harriet with their sons, David and Rick, all portraying themselves in a trend-setting blend of fact-meets-fiction comedy decades before Seinfeld and other semi-reality-based shows. The series humorously chronicled the daily lives of the Nelsons as David and Ricky grew up before millions of weekly viewers. While Ozzie Nelson had been a real-life bandleader and Harriet Nelson a singer, the series would help launch the musical career of their younger son, Ricky, who would become a teen idol with such enduring hits as “Travelin’ Man” and “Hello Mary Lou.” The entire library of "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" has been restored by MPI Media Group from the original 35mm picture and sound elements in association with the UCLA Film & Television Archive, which preserves the elements on behalf of the Nelson family. Uncle Sam

Despite a relatively short-lived career as a director, spanning 16 years and eight films, William Lustig has had a major impact on genre cinema. While filming "making-of" features for Anchor Bay, Lustig formed Blue Underground and started to bring exploitation cinema to the home video market with high-quality DVDs loaded with special features. Blue Underground's latest 4K release is Lustig's very own "Uncle Sam." Master Sergeant Sam Harper (David Fralick) is tragically killed in a horrible accident in Kuwait after his helicopter is shot down by friendly fire. Sam's charred remains are shipped back to his hometown of Twin Rivers, just as the town is preparing for its annual Fourth of July celebration. While being stored at his sister's house, Sam's dead body becomes reanimated and goes on a patriotic killing spree over the course of the holiday weekend. "Uncle Sam" is an over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek satire about American's obsession with military dominance and the great lengths the nation will go in order to appeal to the country's youth.
