Tarzan of the Apes
(1918) Edgar Rice Burroughs’ hero has thrilled movie audiences since the days of the silent screen. Tarzan first swung from the trees in “Tarzan of the Apes” (1918) with the brawny Elmo Lincoln in the title role. With various Louisiana locations serving as a jungle backdrop, director Scott Sidney told the traditional tale of how the orphaned heir to the Greystoke fortune became lord of the jungle. Billed in the old adverts as “The most startling and unforgettable story ever written,” the plot involves a search for the missing Greystoke led by Dr. Porter (Thomas Jefferson), which finds Tarzan in the middle of a brutal vendetta. It appears Tarzan is out to avenge the killing of Kala, the ape who raised him. Soon everyone learns it is not wise to make Tarzan angry. “Tarzan of the Apes” also stars Enid Markey as Porter’s beautiful daughter, Jane, the woman Tarzan loves. As the early promos promised, “You NEVER Will See Another Production Like It!” This release includes the bonus feature, “The Adventures of Tarzan” (1928). Both features are newly restored.
Formats: Blu-ray. (Film Masters).

When mixed-raced Johnny Hayward (Flower Travellin’ Band vocalist Joe Yamanaka) heads from his Harlem home to Tokyo, he becomes the victim of a brutal stabbing in the elevator of a plush hotel hosting a catwalk show by elite fashion designer Kyoko (Mariko Okada). That same night, Kyoko’s son with her powerful politician husband Yohei (Toshiro Mifune) is involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident and flees the country. Suspecting the incidents may be linked, Detective Munesue (Yusaku Matsuda) heads to New York to investigate Johnny’s background. Adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Seiichi Morimura by director Junya Sato and screenwriter Zenzo Matsuyama, and shot on location in Japan and New York by veteran cinematographer Shinsaku Himeda, “Proof of the Man” is a compelling exploration of racial identity and the trauma of the postwar occupation period framed in the form of a whodunnit. Veerana: Vengeance of the Vampire
(1985 — India) A local landowner’s daughter is possessed by the spirit of a dead witch and becomes a bloodsucking seductress. On the next moonless night, she will be used in a hideous ritual to raise the evil witch from her tomb. “Veerana” is one of the most popular horror films made by the Ramsay Brothers. It was also one of their most controversial. Its sexually charged theme of a female vampire seeking out and seducing her male victims before draining them of their blood was a shocker by mid-80s Bollywood standards and the film’s release was delayed by censorship problems for a number of years. The film’s female lead, Jasmin, became a sensation but she disappeared following the film’s premier and was never seen again on screen. Her whereabouts remain a mystery to this day. Brand new 4k transfer from film negative, digitally restored. Formats: Blu-ray. Extras: Introduction to the film by writer Tim Paxton; original trailer. (Mondo Macabro).

Born in Flames
(1983) A blistering rallying cry issued loud, clear, and unapologetically queer, Lizzie Borden’s explosive postpunk provocation is a DIY fantasia of female rebellion set in America 10 years after a revolution that supposedly transformed the country into a democratic socialist utopia. In reality, racism, sexism, and economic inequality are as virulent as ever, and a band of radicals—led by Black, lesbian, and working-class women—join forces to fight back. Told through a furiously fractured, kinetically edited flurry of television news broadcasts, pirate radio transmissions, agitprop, and protests shot guerrilla-style on the streets of New York City, “Born in Flames” is a shock wave of feminist futurism that’s both an essential document of its time and radically ahead of it. Formats: Blu-ray, with 2K digital restoration—preserved by Anthology Film Archives, with restoration funding from the Golden Globe Foundation and The Film Foundation, and supervised and approved by director Lizzie Borden—with uncompressed monaural soundtrack. Extras: Read more here. (The Criterion Collection).
