Brief Encounters / The Long Farewell: Two Films By Kiramuratova
Nobody made films like Kira Muratova. Uncompromising and uncategorizable, the Ukrainian iconoclast withstood decades of censorship to realize her singular vision in hypnotically beautiful, expressionistically heightened films that remain unique in their ability to evoke complex interior worlds. Her first two solo features, "Brief Encounters" and "The Long Farewell," are fascinatingly fragmented portraits of women navigating work, romance, and family life with a mix of deep yearning and playful pragmatism. Long suppressed by Soviet authorities, these films became legendary -- alongwith their maker -- and they now make for a revelatory introduction to this most fearlessly original of artists. BRIEF ENCOUNTERS (1967 -- Russia). Kira Muratova’s first solo feature already displays her sui generis approach to cinema, in an impressionistic portrait of women at work and in love. Through an intricate play of flashbacks and shifting perspectives, "Brief Encounters" reveals the tangled romantic triangle that connects a hard-nosed city planner (played by Muratova herself), her free-spirited geologist husband (legendary Soviet protest singer Vladimir Vysotskiy), and the young woman from the countryside (Nina Ruslanova) whom she hires as her housekeeper. Blending observational realism with striking New Wave–style experimentation, Muratova crafts a wryly perceptive study of two very different women bound by chance and each navigating her own career, dreams, and disappointments. THE LONG FAREWELL (1971 -- Russia). With its daring formalist freedom, Kira Muratova’s pointillist family portrait so perplexed and unnerved Soviet censors that it effectively halted her career for years afterward. A kind of psychological breakup movie, "The Long Farewell" traces the growing rift that develops between an emotionally impulsive single mother (stage legend Zinaida Sharko, transcendent in one of her first film roles) and her increasingly resentful teenage son (Oleg Vladimirsky), who upends her world when he announces that he wishes to live with his faraway father. The seemingly simple premise is rendered anything but by Muratova’s dreamy, drifting style, with off-kilter framing, editing, and dialogue continually pushing cinema’s aesthetic and expressive boundaries outward. Formats: Blu-ray, DVD with new 4K digital restorations, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks. Extras: Interviews with scholars Elena Gorfinkel and Isabel Jacobs; archival interview with director Kira Muratova; essay by film critic Jessica Kiang. Read more here. (The Criterion Collection).

June Zero
(2024 -- Israel) Tzahi Grad, Yoav Levi, Tom Hagi, Joy Rieger. The 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann, a principal architect of the Holocaust, is revisited in a gripping and surprising new vision from American filmmaker Jake Paltrow. Based on true accounts, "June Zero" is told from the unique perspectives of three distinct figures: Eichmann’s Jewish Moroccan prison guard; an Israeli police investigator who also happens to be a Holocaust survivor and a precocious and clever 13-year-old Libyan immigrant. Entirely shot on 16mm film, Paltrow’s vividly textured work brings to life the varied experiences of these characters, emphasizing that the same historical events are often perceived differently by people around the world. "June Zero" underscores the notion that shared traumas have the power to forge the strongest bonds and give rise to unexpected moments of triumph and connection. As the film delves into the complexities of the human experience during this pivotal trial, it serves as a poignant reminder that history's impact can be both diverse and unifying. The Last Emperor
(1987) Bernardo Bertolucci’s "The Last Emperor" won nine Academy Awards, unexpectedly sweeping every category in which it was nominated -- quite a feat for a challenging, multilayered epic directed by an Italian and starring an international cast. Yet the scope of the film was, and remains, undeniably powerful -- the life of Emperor Puyi, who took the throne in 1908, at age three, before witnessing decades of cultural and political upheaval within and without the walls of the Forbidden City. Recreating Qing-dynasty China with astonishing detail and unparalleled craftsmanship by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti, "The Last Emperor" is also an intimate character study of one man reconciling personal responsibility and political legacy.

Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, the film immediately drew controversy from the Polish government for its depiction of the European migrant crisis on the Poland-Belarus border. Shot in stark black-and-white, this riveting thriller explores the intractable conflict from multiple perspectives: a Syrian family fleeing ISIS caught between cruel border guards in both countries; young guards instructed to brutally reject the migrants; and activists who, at great risk, aid the refugees. Director Agnieszka Holland ("Europa Europa") brings an unflinching eye and deep compassion to this blistering critique of a humanitarian calamity that continues to unfold.

Not a Pretty Picture
(1975) Trailblazing filmmaker Martha Coolidge made her feature debut with this unflinchingly personal hybrid of documentary and fiction. Centered on an intense reenactment of Coolidge’s experience of rape in her adolescence, the film casts Michele Manenti (also a survivor) as the director’s younger self, and observes the actor and her castmates as they engage in a profound dialogue about what it means to recreate these traumatic memories, and about their attitudes concerning consent and self-blame. A high-stakes experiment inmetacinema that broke new ground with its uncompromising examination of date rape, "Not a Pretty Picture" brings a stunning immediacy to questions about the on-screen representation of sexual violence and the limits of artistic catharsis. Formats: Blu-ray, DVD with new 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Martha Coolidge, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack. Two-disc sets. Door-to-Door Maniac (1966): Johhny Cash, Donald Woods, Cay Forester, Pamela Mason, Vic Tayback. Originally released in 1961 as "Five Minutes to Live," this low-budget crime drama was re-released in 1966 as "Door-to-Door Maniac." Fred narrates the film in flashback, detailing a suburban bank robbery that goes awry. As part of a simple plan, he hires a hard-up, psychotic hood, Johnny Cabot, to take the wife of the bank's vice president hostage in her own home. What follows is a robbery gone awry in every way. Scanned in 4K from 35mm original archival elements. Right Hand of the Devil (1963): In this rare, little-known film, director Aram Katcher makes his bid to become the next Hitchcock. While prominent movie director he is not, Turkish-born Katcher does star in the film ... and not just on-screen. Producer, story creator, editor, title designer and costume designer are just some of the other roles he took on with his magnum opus. Later, he reportedly destroyed all the 35mm elements. This new 4K scan comes from a rare 16mm reduction print, from the collection of noted film historian and producer Samuel M. Sherman. Katcher leads the cast as an ingenious criminal mastermind who hires a motley crew of questionable henchmen. Their target? A sports arena. Rodriguez's ingenious 1993 debut "El Mariachi" (infamously filmed for only $7000) sees a naive young musician entering a godforsaken border town and finding himself in the middle of a deadly case of mistaken identity. The major studio follow-up "Desperado" (1995) sees Antonio Banderas take up the mantle of the mysterious Mariachi, stalking the Mexican underworld with enough bullets up his sleeves for every bandito in his path. Finally, 2003's "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" sees Rodriguez use every cutting-edge technological innovation in his arsenal to bring the trilogy's explosive conclusion to the screen, as the Mariachi finds himself in the center of a bloody war for the soul of Mexico itself. Fun, fast and full of invention and inspiration, this deadly trio cemented Robert Rodriguez's reputation as an action auteur worth following, and are accompanied here by insightful new interviews with the director and his crew of collaborators. High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray presentations of all three films; 4K (2160p) Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) of "Desperado." Formats: 4K UHD/Blu-ray Combo. Mother
(1996) Reeling after his second divorce and struggling with writer’s block, sci-fi novelist John Henderson (Albert Brooks) resolves to figure out where his life went wrong, and hits on an unorthodox solution: moving back in with his relentlessly disapproving, cheerfully passive-aggressive mother (Debbie Reynolds), whose favorite son has always been John’s younger brother, Jeff (Rob Morrow). It’s an experiment that, however harebrained, delivers surprising results. Brooks’s film perfectly blends the writer-director-star’s biting wit with insight and inviting warmth, while giving him a formidable foil in the delightful Reynolds, triumphant in a comeback role that’s equal parts caustic and charming.
Formats: 4K UHD + Blu-ray, Blu-ray, with new 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Albert Brooks, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. In the 4K UHD edition: One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features. Extras: New interview with Brooks; new interview with actor Rob Morrow; teaser directed by Brooks; essay by critic Carrie Rickey. Read more here. (The Criterion Collection).

Real Life
(1979) Decades before reality television reigned supreme, there was Albert Brooks’s debut feature, "Real Life," a brilliantly deadpan, stylistically innovative satire about the perils and pitfalls of trying to capture the truth on film. The writer-director plays “Albert Brooks,” a narcissistic Hollywood filmmaker who plans to spend the year in Phoenix embedded with Warren and Jeanette Yeager (Charles Grodin and Frances Lee McCain) and their two children, deploying an arsenal of cutting-edge equipment (including the over-the-head Ettinaur 226XL camera) to capture an American family’s ordinary day-to-day. Chronicling the project’s disastrous fallout, as the meddlesome Albert can’t help getting too close to his subjects, this pioneering mockumentary is more relevant than ever amid today’s media landscape. Formats: 4K UHD + Blu-ray, Blu-ray, with new 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Albert Brooks, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack. In the 4K UHD edition: One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features. Extras: New interview with Brooks; new interview with actor Frances Lee McCain; 3D trailer directed by Brooks. Read more here. (The Criterion Collection).

Viva La Muerte!
(1971 -- France) As the Spanish Civil War draws to a close, Fando, a young boy, is tormented by violently conflicting feelings towards his mother, who he suspects may have had a role in his father's capture by fascists; feelings that manifest themselves as a nightmare onslaught of terrifying and bizarre imagery. Based on Fernando Arrabal's own brutal experiences during the Civil War, "Viva la muerte!" is a shockingly provocative work of surrealist cinema from the artist and filmmaker, who co-founded the 'Panic Movement' collective alongside Alejandro Jodorowsky. Acclaimed on release by critics and scorned by censors, "Viva la muerte!" would later achieve notoriety as a midnight movie, and was a favorite film of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Restored in 4K with the collaboration of Fernando Arrabal, Radiance is proud to present "Viva la muerte!" on English-subtitled Blu-ray for the first time ever. New 4K restoration of the original 35mm negative by the Cinémathèque Toulouse in collaboration with Fernando Arrabal. Formats: Blu-ray. Extras: Audio discussion from the Project Booth podcast featuring Mike White, Heather Drain and Jess Byard; "Sur les traces de Baal" short documentary by Abdellatif Ben Ammar in which the filmmaker followed Arrabal’s film and captured him at work on "Viva la Muerte!"; "VIDARRABAL" feature-length documentary on Arrabal by Xavier Pasturel Barron capturing the life and work of this singular filmmaker, playwright, painter and essayist, featuring interviews with admirers, friends and family, including members of the Panic Movement; interview with scholar and Spanish cinema expect David Archibald; trailer; reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork; booklet featuring new writing by Sabina Stent and archival interview with Fernando Arrabal. The Woman & Offspring
Almost a decade after Lucky McKee burst upon the indie horror scene and became a "Master of Horror" in the making thanks to his directorial debut "May," he teamed up with legendary cult author Jack Ketchum for his most shocking and brutal film to date: "The Woman" (2011), an instant cause célèbre on its Sundance premiere. The Woman (Pollyanna McIntosh, "The Walking Dead") is the last surviving member of a deadly clan of feral cannibals that has roamed the American wilderness for decades. When successful country lawyer Chris Cleek (Sean Bridgers, "Room") stumbles upon her while hunting in the woods, he decides to capture and "civilize" her with the help of his seemingly perfect all-American family, including his wife Belle (Angela Bettis, "May") and daughter Peggy (Lauren Ashley Carter," Darling"). The Cleeks will soon learn, however, that hell hath no fury like The Woman scorned. Experience McKee and Ketchum's uncompromisingly twisted vision of the dark side of the American family in a definitive new edition, including a 4K remaster, a slew of bonus features, and a bonus disc featuring a restoration of its gut-churning 2009 predecessor "Offspring," also starring McIntosh. 4K restorations of "The Woman" and "Offspring," supervised and approved by Lucky McKee and Andrew van den Houten. Formats: 4K UHD. Extras: Read more here. (Arrow Video/MVD Entertainment).
