photo for Bushman

Bushman

(1971) In 1968's tumult, a Nigerian student in San Francisco experiences clashing cultures and elucidates society's ineptitude at living humanely. 1968: Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy, and Bobby Hutton are among the recent dead. In Nigeria, the Civil War is entering its second year with no end in sight. In San Francisco, the adventures of Gabriel, a young Nigerian reflect tribal, personal, and racial frictions during the tumultuous sixties. Truth is stranger than fiction in "Bushman," a rare sort of film portrait, part document, part imagined - poetic in its approach to real events. In 1968, Paul Okpokam came to America and David Shickele wanted to make a film of his Nigerian friend's experience coming to teach at San Francisco State College. A docudrama of Okpokam’s experience as the “other” in a tumultuous time of cultural revolution, he is seen through the prism of American racism and exoticism. But the film turns on astonishing real-life events as Okpokam is falsely accused of terrorism during events at the San Francisco State College strike of that year, thrown in prison for a year, and then deported as an undesirable.A "lost film" restored by the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive and The Film Foundation. Formats: DVD. (Milestone).

A work of tough beauty, "La haine" is a landmark of 1990s French cinema and a gripping reflection of its country’s ongoing identity crisis. Formats: 4K UHD + Blu-ray combo. photo for Special Silencers

Special Silencers

(1982 -- Indonesia) A legendary entry into the Indonesian “cult film” canon. Chock full of crazy martial arts, unbelievably yucky special effects, a touch of black magic, and even torture by smelly shoes. This one has got it all. The plot is simplicity itself. A corrupt politician in rural Indonesia wants to impose himself as the boss of the local territory. To do this he has to eliminate the competition. To do that he uses his “special silencers” - small red pills apparently intended to enhance meditative states. But when taken with food or drink they erupt inside the victim’s stomach and emerge through the flesh like ragged, blood covered tree branches. It literally has to be seen to be believed. But that’s not all… the film features the dynamic duo (soon to be husband and wife) of Eva Arnaz and Barry Prima. Big stars in Indonesia at the time and both skilled martial artists. Seeing Eva kick bad-guy ass is a joy to behold. She, along with Barry, was one of the jewels in the crown of Indonesian exploitation cinema. This is the first ever video release of the film in its intended aspect ratio. Formats: Blu-ray. (Mondo Macabro).

Dogfight

(1991) An ineffably bittersweet portrait of youth in the 1960s, Nancy Savoca’s funny, sensitive tale of love and war etches two vividly alive characters: aspiring San Francisco folk singer Rose (Lili Taylor) and hotheaded, Vietnam-bound marine Eddie (River Phoenix), who meet on the occasion of a cruelly misogynistic party where men compete to bring the most unattractive dates they can find. But what begins as a night to forget unexpectedly develops into something far more meaningful. Featuring music by folk legends Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Pete Seeger, Dogfight captures the miracle of human connection while gracefully subverting ideas surrounding machismo, patriotic duty, and the very meaning of America itself. Formats: Blu-ray. New 2K digital restoration, supervised by director Nancy Savoca, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Extras: Read more here. (The Criterion Collection).
