This Week’s DVD, Blu-ray, Digital Releases: September 2-September 8

Tuesday, September 2 — Monday, September 8

*OnVideo’s week begins with “New Release” Tuesdays

Last Week’s Releases: Tuesday, August 26 — Monday, September 1

There’s very few DVD/Blu-ray releases this week — the Tuesdays afrer three-day and four-day holiday weekends are usually slow for new releases. The thinking may be that consumers — after partying and barbequing all weekend — aren’t going to want to go shopping for new release DVDs. Couple that with the increasing emphasis on streaming — which the studios now prefer because the cost of producing and distributing physical media is much higher compared to digital distribution — and DVD Tuesdays are getting more and more slimmer. Things pick up next week with the release of such theatricals as “Ballerina: From the World of John Wick,” “Elio,” “Jurassic Park Rebirth,” “Materialists” and “The Surfer.”

Tarzan of the Apes

photo for Tarzan of the Apes (1918) Edgar Rice Burroughs’ hero has thrilled movie audiences since the days of the silent screen. Tarzan first swung from the trees in “Tarzan of the Apes” (1918) with the brawny Elmo Lincoln in the title role. With various Louisiana locations serving as a jungle backdrop, director Scott Sidney told the traditional tale of how the orphaned heir to the Greystoke fortune became lord of the jungle. Billed in the old adverts as “The most startling and unforgettable story ever written,” the plot involves a search for the missing Greystoke led by Dr. Porter (Thomas Jefferson), which finds Tarzan in the middle of a brutal vendetta. It appears Tarzan is out to avenge the killing of Kala, the ape who raised him. Soon everyone learns it is not wise to make Tarzan angry. “Tarzan of the Apes” also stars Enid Markey as Porter’s beautiful daughter, Jane, the woman Tarzan loves. As the early promos promised, “You NEVER Will See Another Production Like It!” This release includes the bonus feature, “The Adventures of Tarzan” (1928). Both features are newly restored. Formats: Blu-ray. (Film Masters).
