The Four Feathers
(1939) This spectacular Technicolor epic, directed by Zoltan Korda, is considered the finest of the many adaptations of A.E.W. Mason's classic 1902 adventure novel about the British Empire's exploits in Africa, and a crowning achievement of Alexander Korda's legendary production company, London Films. Set at the end of the 19th century, "The Four Feathers" follows the travails of a young officer (John Clements) accused of cowardice after he resigns his post on the eve of a major deployment to Khartoum; he must fight to redeem himself in the eyes of his fellow officers (including Ralph Richardson) and fiancee (June Duprez). Featuring music by Miklos Rozsa and Oscar-nominated cinematography by Georges Perinal, "The Four Feathers" is a thrilling, thunderous epic. New high-definition digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition. Based on the controversial cult-classic novel by Hubert Selby Jr. about the underbelly of the working class in Brooklyn in the 1950s. Follows a canvas of disillusioned characters as they play out their dead-end existences of drugs, crime and violence. Set against a backdrop of union corruption, they must overcome or be defeated by their surroundings and, ultimately, themselves: a union strike leader (Lang) discovers he is gay; a prostitute (Leigh) falls in love with one of her clients; a family cannot cope with their daughter's (Lake) illegitimate pregnancy. The true story of Howard Marks (aka Mr. Nice, a cult figure who inspired books and songs), a middle-class Welsh boy and Oxford scholar who became one of Britain's biggest marijuana smugglers and hobnobbed with Hollywood hotshots, Arab millionaires and IRA honchos until his arrest and eventual 25-year prison sentence. Snuff Box

The Trip
(2011) Dir.: Michael Winterbottom; Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Claire Keelan, Margo Stilley. When a newspaper offers Steve Coogan the chance to review a series of fine restaurants in the English countryside, he thinks it will make for a lovely getaway with his girlfriend Mischa, but when Mischa backs out, Rob Brydon -- Coogan's best friend and source of eternal aggravation -- fills in as a less-than-ideal travel companion. In semi-fictional performances using largely improvised dialogue from these two real-life friends (the co-stars of Winterbottom's similar reality/fiction mashup "Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story"), Coogan and Brydon can't help but try to outdo each other in conversations about their careers, literature, family, good food, fame, geology and ABBA as they endure long car rides between meal after meal.
