  • Skyfall

photo Daniel Craig is back as James Bond -- 007 -- in this 23rd adventure in the longest-running film franchise of all time. Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. Someone is going after MI6 and its agents in an effort to discredit M (Judi Dench), and the service's leader is left with only one ally she can trust: Bond. 007 takes to the shadows -- to follow a trail to the mysterious Silva (Javier Bardem), an ex-MI6 agent who seeks revenge on M for being drummed out of the service years before. Bond captures Silva, takes him back to England, setting the stage for a spectacular final act pitting Bond and M against a horde of Silva's men. There's a lot to like in this Bond, the highest grossing of the entire series: Virtually non-stop action, Bardem as one of the nastiest Bond villains in recent memory, and the return of the august Aston Martin DB5. Hats off to director Sam Mendes, who's breathed new life into the franchise. Vitals: Director: Sam Mendes. Stars: Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Albert Finney, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory, Rory Kinnear. 2012, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 143min., Comedy, Box office gross: $299.349 million, MGM. 4 stars

  • Robot & Frank

photo This delightful indie film, set in the near future and starring Frank Langella as a retired cat burglar whose memory has begun to fade, was a pleasant surprise in an uneventful early fall movie release schedule. Though his daughter thinks he's ready to be placed in a nursing home, his son chooses a different option: Against the old man's wishes, he buys Frank a walking, talking humanoid robot programmed to improve his physical and mental health. Frank hates the robot, but eventually comes round -- and the two "companions" try their luck as a heist team. It's a pleasing, funny and somewhat heartbreaking story about finding friends and family in the most unexpected places. Co-stars James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Susan Sarandon, Peter Sarsgaard and Jeremy Strong. Vitals: Director: Jake Schreier. Stars: Frank Langella, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Susan Sarandon, Peter Sarsgaard, Jeremy Strong. 2012, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 89 min., Comedy Drama, Box office gross: $3.298 million, Samuel Goldwyn Films/Sony. 4 stars

  • The Sessions

photo Based on the poignantly optimistic autobiographical writings of California-based journalist and poet Mark O'Brien (John Hawkes) who, confined to an iron lung, was determined -- at age 38 -- to lose his virginity. With the help of a sex therapist (Helen Hunt) and the guidance of his priest (William H. Macy), he set out to make his dream a reality. A well-told, adult drama that highlights Hawkes' and Hunt's talents. Vitals:Director: Ben Lewin. Stars: John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, William H. Macy, Moon Bloodgood, Annika Marks, Rhea Perlman. 2012, CC, MPAA rating: R, 96 min., Drama, Box office gross: $4.951 million, Warner. 3 stars

  • Bully

photo The critically-acclaimed documentary that sparked a national movement that rallied people to stand up to bullying, hate, and intolerance. Here are the facts: Thirteen million kids will be bullied in the U.S. this year, making bullying the most common form of violence experienced by young people in the nation. Three million students will be absent each month because they feel unsafe at school. Thirty percent of children who reported being bullied said they sometimes brought weapons to school. School personnel are reported to notice or intervene in only one out of every twenty-five incidents. Fifty percent of the time, when an someone intervenes in bullying, the bullying stops within ten seconds. Bullying is a serious problem, and the solutions belong to us all. Directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch, "Bully" is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. The documentary follows five kids and families over the course of a school year. Stories include two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her 14-year-old daughter who has been incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. With an intimate glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals' offices, the film offers insight into the often cruel world of the lives of bullied children. As teachers, administrators, kids and parents struggle to find answers, The Bully Project examines the dire consequences of bullying through the testimony of strong and courageous youth. Through the power of their stories, the film aims to be a catalyst for change in the way we deal with bullying as parents, teachers, children and society as a whole. Vitals: Director: Lee Hirsch. 2012, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 99 min., Documentary, Box office gross: $3.483 million, The Weinstein Company. 3 stars

  • The Man With the Iron Fists

photo This very complicated martial arts action-adventure -- inspired by kung-fu classics as interpreted by actor-turned director RZA and producer Eli Roth -- is a no-holds barred blood fest of gigantic proportions. Set in 19th century China, warring clans (named the Wolves, Lions, Hyenas and Rodents) battle each other in Jungle Village using weapons created by ex-American slave The Blacksmith (RZA). When the emperor entrusts the Lion clan with a shipment of gold, the head Lion's lieutenants assassinate him and hijack the loot, setting the stage for a series of pitched fights involving the emperor's secret agent Jack Knife (Russell Crowe); X-Blade, the head Lion's avenging son (Rick Yune); Madam Blossom (Lucy Liu), the head of the local brothel and also leader of the female assassins The Black Widows; and the Brass Body (David Bautista), a giant of a killer whose flesh turns to metal when attacked. When the Lions cut off The Blacksmith's arms, Jack Knife grafts a pair of iron limbs and fists on the stumps, giving the movie its title and raison d'être for a monumental closing act of extreme carnage. The well-choreographed action sequences make up for some mundane non-action interludes as well as RZA'S dead-pan and lackluster acting chops. Loads of fun.

Vitals: Director: RZA. Stars: RZA, Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, Cung Le, Byron Mann, Rick Yune, Jamie Chung, David Bautista, Osric Chau, Zhu Zhu, Celina Jade, Dennis Chan. 2012, CC, MPAA rating: R, 95 min., Action, Box office gross: $15.522 million, Universal. 3 stars

  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower

photo Adaptation of Stephen Chbosky's acclaimed best-selling coming-of-age novel. Beautiful, free-spirited Sam (Emma Watson) and her fearless stepbrother Patrick (Ezra Miller) shepherd Charlie through new friendships, first love, burgeoning sexuality, wild parties, midnight screenings of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and the quest for the perfect song. Vitals: Director: Stephen Chbosky. Stars: Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, Paul Rudd, Nina Dobrev, Dylan McDermott, Johnny Simmons, Nicholas Braun, Mae Whitman. 2012, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 103 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $13.059 million, Summut/Lionsgate. 3 stars
