Oh, Canada

(2024) Director: Paul Schrader. Stars: Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, Michael Imperioli, Jacob Elordi, Caroline Dhavernas. Famed Canadian-American leftist documentary filmmaker Leonard Fife (Gere) was one of sixty thousand draft evaders and deserters who fled to Canada to avoid serving in Vietnam. Now in his late seventies, Fife is dying of cancer in Montreal and has agreed to a final interview in which he is determined to bare all his secrets at last, to demythologize his mythologized life. A reflective, moving masterpiece from director Paul Schrader, who reunites with Gere for the first time since "American Gigolo" (1980). Fiery but feeling his years and his illness, ailing filmmaker Fife wants to tell his life story, unfiltered, before it’s too late. As the director of lauded documentary exposés, he has much to be proud of, but his avoidance of the Vietnam War draft and his past relationships harbor thorny truths. Finally choosing to reveal all about his life and career, Leonard sits for an extended filmed interview with his former student Malcolm (Imperioli, charging ahead with candid stories about his younger self (Elordi) in the fractious 1960s and beyond. At Leonard’s insistence, his wife and indispensable partner, Emma (Thurman), hears everything. Leonard’s successes are held up against his failings -- the fibs held up against the facts -- and as the man in full is cleansed of the myth, Leonard must confront what is left. photo for Punch-Drunk Love

Punch-Drunk Love

(2002) Chaos lurks in every corner of this giddily off-kilter foray into romantic comedy by Paul Thomas Anderson. Struggling to cope with his erratic temper, novelty-toilet-plunger salesman Barry Egan (Adam Sandler, demonstrating remarkable versatility in his first dramatic role) spends his days collecting frequent-flier-mile coupons and dodging the insults of his seven sisters. The promise of a new life emerges when Barry inadvertently attracts the affection of a mysterious woman named Lena (Emily Watson), but their budding relationship is threatened when he falls prey to the swindling operator of a phone sex line and her deranged boss (played with maniacal brio by Philip Seymour Hoffman). Fueled by the careening momentum of a baroque-futurist score by Jon Brion, the Cannes-award-winning "Punch-Drunk Love" channels the spirit of classic Hollywood and the whimsy of Jacques Tati into an idiosyncratic ode to the delirium of new romance. Formats: 4K UHD + Blu-ray combo with 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Paul Thomas Anderson, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack. One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features. Extras: Read more here. (The Criterion Collection).

photo for Alice, Sweet Alice

Alice, Sweet Alice

(1976) A young Brooke Shields meets an untimely end in this religious-themed proto slasher par excellence from director Alfred Sole. On the day of her first communion, young Karen (Shields) is savagely murdered by an unknown assailant in a yellow rain mac and creepy translucent mask. But the nightmare is far from over - as the knife-wielding maniac strikes again and again, Karen's bereaved parents are forced to confront the possibility that Karen's wayward sister Alice might be the one behind the mask. Bearing influences from the likes of Hitchcock, the then-booming Italian giallo film and more specifically, Nicolas Roeg's "Don't Look Now," "Alice, Sweet Alice" is an absolutely essential - if often overlooked - entry in the canon of 1970s American horror. Brand new 4K restoration of the original theatrical version from the original camera negative by Arrow Films. Ultra HD presentations of three versions via seamless branching: Communion (original), Alice, Sweet Alice (theatrical) and Holy Terror (re-release). Formats: 4K UHD. Extras: Read more here. photo for A Certain Killer/A Killer’s Key

A Certain Killer/A Killer’s Key

(1967) Anticipating the cool aesthetic of Seijun Suzuki's "Branded to Kill" and based on a crime novel by Shinji Fujiwara, the author of the original material for the same year's "A Colt is My Passport," "A Certain Killer" and "A Killer's Key" are similarly stylish contemporary hitman thrillers directed by Daiei's top director of jidai-geki, Kazuo Mori and starring the studio's top actor Raizo Ichikawa. In "A Certain Killer," Shiozaki's low-profile existence as a chef at a local sushi restaurant serves as a front for his true job as a professional assassin whose modus operandi is poisoned needles. He's approached by Maeda, a low-ranking member of a local yakuza group, to take out a rival gang boss. But the sudden arrival into his life of a spirited young woman, Keiko (Yumiko Nogawa), has dramatic ramifications on his relationship with his new employer. Ichikawa's lone wolf assassin is back in "A Killer's Key," this time masquerading as a traditional dance instructor named Nitta who is called in to avert a potential financial scandal that threatens to engulf a powerful yakuza group with ties to powerful figures in the political establishment. Co-scripted by the director Yasuzo Masumura and featuring masterful scope cinematography with an expressionistic eye for color by one of Japan's most esteemed cinematographers, Kazuo Miyagawa ("Rashomon," "Ugetsu"), these Japanese crime drama essentials are presented for the very first time to the English-language home video market. Formats: Blu-ray. Extras: Read more here. (Arrow Video/MVD Entertainment).

photo for King Lear

King Lear

(1987) Jean-Luc Godard’s first English-language narrative feature is a radical anti-adaptation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece that finds the visionary filmmaker continuing to reinvent the syntax of cinema. In a post-Chernobyl world where culture has been lost, William Shakespeare Jr. V (played by theater director Peter Sellars) attempts to reconstruct his ancestor’s play, abetted by a cast that includes Molly Ringwald, Burgess Meredith, and Godard himself as a crazed avant savant. Through a dense layering of sounds, images, and ideas about everything from language to the economics of filmmaking to the very meaning of art in a ruined world, Godard fashions a puckish and profound metacinematic riddle to be endlessly analyzed, argued over, and savored. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray, with New 2K digital restoration, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Extras: Audio recording of the 1987 Cannes Film Festival press conference, featuring director Jean-Luc Godard; new interviews with Richard Brody, author of" Everything Is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard," actor Molly Ringwald; and actor and co-screenwriter Peter Sellars; an essay by Brody. photo for Crossing Delancey

Crossing Delancey

(1988) Joan Micklin Silver’s wonderfully affectionate spin on the romantic comedy infuses the genre with a fresh, personal perspective, following an unmarried Jewish woman’s search for fulfillment in New York City. Happily independent bookstore manager Izzy (a luminous Amy Irving) isn’t looking for love, but she’s forced to reevaluate her desires when she catches the eye of two very different men: a self-centered novelist (Jeroen Krabbé) and the mild-mannered Lower East Side pickle seller (Peter Riegert) with whom her old-fashioned bubbie (scene-stealing Yiddish-theater star Reizl Bozyk) sets her up. A love letter to 1980s Manhattan shot in beautifully burnished, autumnal tones, "Crossing Delancey" gracefully captures the magic of a city where disparate cultures, generations, and traditions both clash and connect. Formats: 4K UHD + Blu-ray Combo, Blu-ray, with new 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by cinematographer Theo van de Sande, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. photo for Drugstore Cowboy

Drugstore Cowboy

(1989) Gus Van Sant’s dreamy, drifty, deadpan second feature—an addiction drama based on James Fogle’s autobiographical novel—captures the zonked-out textures and almost surreal absurdity of a life lived fix to fix. Swinging between dope-fueled disconnection and edgy paranoia, Matt Dillon plays the leader of a ragtag crew (also featuring Kelly Lynch, Heather Graham, and James Le Gros) that robs pharmacies for pills, coasting across the 1970s Pacific Northwest while trying to outrun sobriety and fate. With a brilliant supporting turn from counterculture high priest William S. Burroughs and a lyrical feeling for the streetscapes of Van Sant’s hometown of Portland, Oregon, "Drugstore Cowboy" cemented the director’s status as a preeminent poet of outsiderhood. Formats: 4K UHD + Blu-ray Combo, Blu-ray, withnew 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Gus Van Sant and director of photography Robert Yeoman, with uncompressed stereo soundtrack. In the 4K UHD edition: One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features. Extras: Read more here. (The Criterion Collection).

Last Summer

(2023 -- France) After a decade-long absence, Catherine Breillat triumphantly returns with an exploration of the themes that have made her one of cinema’s most rousing and controversial directors: the ecstasies and wounds of sexuality, and its power to unsettle. Compelled by her stepson’s Apollonian beauty, Anne embarks on an affair that threatens the stability of her household, along with her professional integrity, as she faces a choice between accountability and deception. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray. Extras: "Meet the Filmmakers" a new interview with director Catherine Breillat; trailer. (Janus Contemporaries).

Legend of the Eight Samurai

(1983 -- Japan) Japanese boxoffice sensation directed by the revered Kinji Fukasaku ("Battle Royale"), "Legend of the Eight Samurai" brings together an impressive ensemble cast, including Hiroko Yakushimaru, Hiroyuki Sanada, Sonny Chiba and Etsuko Shihomi in a sweeping epic that blends fantasy with historical drama. The Satomi Clan have been all-but wiped out by their mortal enemies, the ghoulish members of the undead Hikita Clan. The last Satomi survivor is Princess Shizu (Yakushimaru), who goes into hiding to avoid meeting the same fate as her family. Left to wander on her own, she eventually becomes entangled with farmer-turned-soldier Shinbei (Sanada) and then a pair of warrior monks who reveal themselves to be two of eight fabled Hakkenden - or "Dog Warriors" - who can lift the curse that has been placed upon her family. Together, they must find the rest of the Hakkenden and take on the leader of the Hikita Clan: the evil Tamazusa (Mari Natsuki). Following "Message from Space," which transported the story to a science fiction setting, "Legend of the Eight Samurai" is Fukasaku's second loose adaptation of Toshio Kamata's Shin Satomi Hakkenden, itself an adaptation of Kyokutei Bakin's earlier epic novel "Nanso Satomi Hakkenden." The Masters of Cinema series is proud to present the film on Blu-ray for the first time in North America from a new 4K restoration. Formats: Blu-ray. Trinity

(2024) On the morning of July 16, 1945, in the desert of New Mexico, the Manhattan Project culminated in the Trinity test, the detonation of the first nuclear bomb. In an instant shrouded in secrecy, the world was forever changed. What followed – the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, thousands of nuclear tests, and a Cold War arms race – further clarified the new danger. Mankind now had the power to destroy all life on Earth. "Trinity" is a philosophical movie about the birth of the nuclear age and the silences that surround it. Filmed over six days, it captures mysterious sights from the atomic Southwest: a dark obelisk marking ground zero; an owl-themed bar haunted by ghosts of nuclear scientists; Trinitite for sale at a local rock shop. Through first-person accounts from downwinders, uranium miners, and witnesses to the Trinity blast, it highlights what has been left out by official histories – about New Mexico, Navajo Nation, and Japan. Weaving together interviews with archival footage, camcorder recordings, and haunting music, the film juxtaposes government narratives about the nuclear age with the lived reality of citizens, leaving viewers to meditate on the ironies that emerge. Performance

(1970) The grimy criminal underworld and hedonistic rock-and-roll counterculture of late-1960s London collide in this mind-scrambling, kaleidoscopic freak-out. On the run from his vengeful boss, a ruthless gangster (James Fox) hides out in the Notting Hill home of a reclusive rock star (Mick Jagger) and his companions (Anita Pallenberg and Michele Breton), who open the doors of his perception as the lines between reality and fantasy, male and female, persona and self, dissolve in a hallucinogenic haze. Built around Jagger’s most magnetic narrative-film performance, this visionary collaboration between enigmatic artist Donald Cammell and first-time director Nicolas Roeg is a daringly transgressive, endlessly influential journey to the dark side of bohemia. Formats: 4K UHD + Blu-ray Combo, Blu-ray, with new 4K digital restoration, approved by producer Sandy Lieberson, with uncompressed monaural original-UK-version soundtrack. In the 4K UHD edition: One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features. Extras: Read more here. (The Criterion Collection).
