Cut to the Chase: Charley Chase Comedy Collection Charles Joseph Parrott of Baltimore, Maryland started out in vaudeville during the rough and tumble days in the first decade of the 20th century. Exactly 100 years ago this year, this young man fresh off the stage, started working at the Christie Film Company as a juvenile lead, a gag writer and a comedy director. When he changed his name to Charley Chase and found himself featured in the Hal Roach short comedies, he became one of the great geniuses and stars of Hollywood's golden era of silent comedy. As renowned as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd at the time, Chase easily matched them laugh for laugh. The always-dapper Chase specialized in portraying the pleasant common man with very common skills placed in the most uncommon of circumstances. Included in this two-disc set are "April Fool," "The 'Fraidy Cat," "Bad Boy," "The Caretaker's Daughter," "Be Your Age," "Bromo and Juliet," "Dog Shy," "Charley My Boy," "The Uneasy Three," "Innocent Husbands," "Isn't Life Terrible?," "What Price Goofy?," "Long Fliv the King," "Mama Behave," "Mighty Like A Moose," "Mum's the Word." Formats: DVD. (Milestone Films).

Dinotasia (2012) One of our favorite natural history subjects, the good old dinosaur, gets a makeover and then some in this fantastically ambitious and groundbreaking documentary. Based on cutting-edge paleontology and the latest fossil records, "Dinotasia" presents a series of vignettes about dinosaurs -- both familiar faces and some we have only found out about in the past 10 years. The film uses CGI to bring the stories to life, but draws on animation's birth in silent film and early Disney to create proper, traditional visual storytelling. It's more than a documentary, it's a love letter to fans of graphic novel-style film vignettes and classic film animation. Werner Herzog narrates. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray Disc, Digital. (Cinedign Entertainment/Flatiron Film Company).

Rags and Riches Mary Pickford is known today as the first film actress to achieve international super stardom. Funny, feisty and diminutive, she was also the first actor to have complete artistic control of her films. And because Pickford chose to work with the best directors, writers, craftsmen and editors, what incredible films they are. These three titles, newly mastered with full orchestral scores, demonstrate the star's commitment to excellence and the brilliant range of her acting: "The Poor Little Rich Girl" (1917), "The Hoodlum" (1919) and "Sparrows" (1926). Formats: DVD, Blu-ray Disc. (Milestone Films).
Rashomon (1950) A riveting psychological thriller that investigates the nature of truth and the meaning of justice, "Rashomon" is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. Sunset Boulevard BLU-RAY DEBUT (1950) Dir.: Billy Wilder; William Holden, Gloria Swanson, Erich von Stroheim, Nancy Olson, Fred Clark, Lloyd Gough, Jack Webb. Newly restored. Not only a cinematic masterpiece, "Sunset Boulevard" also captures some extraordinary moments in Hollywood history, including Cecil B. DeMille on the set of "Samson and Delilah," which was erected in a soundstage still in use on the Paramount lot. Director Erich von Stroheim, who had directed Swanson previously in real life, appears as Norma Desmond's butler and former director. Various notable figures make appearances in the film as themselves, including actors Buster Keaton, Hedda Hopper, Anna Q. Nilsson and H.B. Warner. And, of course, there are the iconic images of Hollywood itself, including the well-known shot of Paramount's legendary gates.

The main objective of the restoration effort was to remain faithful to the distinctive look created by the director and photo cinematographer. Stark shadows and darkness occasionally cut by the bright light of a film projector are themselves essential in telling the disturbing story of madness and obsession. The restoration team secured a vintage print made at the time of release from the Library of Congress to view and study the tones and extensively researched documentation from the production to accurately present the director's original vision. Although none of the original nitrate materials survive, the restoration team conducted a worldwide search for the earliest generation elements, ultimately using an acetate 35mm duplicate negative as a primary source for scanning at 4K to create the highest picture quality possible. In addition, work done on the film's original mono soundtrack back in 2001-2002 was expanded upon. As with the picture, no original sound materials survive, but a variety of source elements were analyzed, transferred, digitally cleaned and incorporated into the final restoration -- including optical soundtrack negatives, music and effects tracks and partial music master materials.

The Blu-ray boasts over two hours of in-depth bonus material that sheds light on the film, its origins and its path to becoming a classic. Also includes a never-before-released deleted scene entitled "The Paramount-Don't-Want-Me Blues," which was obtained from the Academy Film Archive and features Academy Award-winning songwriters Jay Livingston and Ray Evans performing a comedic song that was cut for fear of being too Hollywood insider in 1950. Extras: Commentary by Ed Sikov, author of "On Sunset Blvd: The Life and Times of Billy Wilder"; featurettes: "Sunset Boulevard: The Beginning," "Sunset Boulevard: A Look Back," "The Noir Side of Sunset Boulevard," "Sunset Boulevard Becomes a Classic," "Two Sides of Ms. Swanson," "Stories of Sunset Boulevard," "Mad About the Boy: A Portrait of William Holden," "Recording Sunset Boulevard," "The City of Sunset Boulevard," "Franz Waxman and the Music of Sunset Boulevard," "Behind the Gates: The Lot," "Edith Head: The Paramount Years ," "Paramount in the '50s": "Morgue Prologue" script pages, deleted scene "The Paramount-Don't-Want-Me Blues"; Hollywood location map; production, movie and publicity galleries; theatrical trailer. Trilogy of Life In the early 1970s, the great Italian poet, philosopher, and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini ("Salo, or The 120 Days of Sodom") brought to the screen a trio of masterpieces of premodern world literature: Giovanni Boccaccio's "The Decameron" (1971), Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" (1972) and "The Thousand and One Nights" (often known as "The Arabian Nights") (1974) and in doing so created his most uninhibited and extravagant work, which he titled his "Trilogy of Life." In this brazen and bawdy triptych, the director set out to challenge consumer capitalism and celebrate the uncorrupted human body while commenting on contemporary sexual and religious mores and hypocrisies. His scatological humor and rough-hewn sensuality leave all modern standards of decency behind; these are physical, provocative, and wildly entertaining films, all extraordinarily designed by Dante Ferretti and featuring evocative music by Ennio Morricone. New high-definition digital restorations of all three films, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks on the Blu-ray editions. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray Disc. The Dust Bowl (2012) Two-part, four-hour documentary by Ken Burns offers a dramatic depiction of how human blindness to the balance of nature destroyed the farmlands of the Great Plains throughout the 1930s as prairies were turned into deserts and massive deadly dust storms took the lives and hopes of many Americans. Yet amidst the heartbreaking tragedy, there are also tales of heroic perseverance as families found ways to survive and government agencies and farmers worked together to develop new farming and conservation methods. Eclipse Series 37: When Horror Came to Shochiku Following years of a certain radioactive rubber beast's domination of the box office, many Japanese studios tried to replicate the formula with their own brands of monster movies. One of the most fascinating dives into that fiendish deep end was the short-lived one from Shochiku, a studio better known for its elegant dramas by the likes of Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu. In 1967 and 1968, the company created four certifiably batty, low-budget fantasies, tales haunted by watery ghosts, plagued by angry insects, and stalked by aliens -- including one in the form of a giant chicken-lizard. Shochiku's outrageous and oozy horror period shows a studio leaping into the unknown, even if only for one brief, bloody moment.
  • The X from Outer Space (1967): When a scientist crew returns from Mars with some space spores that contaminated their ship, they inadvertently bring about a nightmarish Earth invasion -- after the spores are analyzed in a lab, one escapes, eventually growing into an enormous, rampaging beaked beast.
  • Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell (1968): After an airplane is forced to crash-land in a remote area, its passengers find themselves face-to-face with an alien force that wants to possess their bodies and souls -- and perhaps take over the entire human race. Filled with creatively repulsive effects -- including a very invasive bloblike life-form.
  • The Living Skeleton (1968): In this atmospheric tale of revenge from beyond the watery grave, a pirate-ransacked freighter's violent past comes back to haunt a young woman living in a seaside town. Mixing elements of kaidan (ghost stories), doppelganger thrillers, and mad-scientist movies, this is a wild and eerie work, with beautiful widescreen, black-and-white cinematography.
  • Genocide (1968): The insects are taking over in this nasty piece of disaster horror. A group of military personnel transporting a hydrogen bomb are left to figure out how and why swarms of killer bugs took down their plane; the answer is more deliriously nihilistic -- and convoluted -- than you could imagine. Also known as "War of the Insects," "Genocide" enacts a cracked doomsday scenario like no other.

Heaven's Gate (1980) A visionary critique of American expansionism, "Heaven's Gate," directed by Oscar winner Michael Cimino ("The Deer Hunter"), is among Hollywood's most ambitious and unorthodox epics. Kris Kristofferson brings his weathered sensuality to the role of a Harvard graduate who has relocated all the way to Wyoming as a federal marshal; there, he learns of a government-sanctioned plot by rich cattle barons to kill the area's European settlers for their land. The resulting skirmish is based on the real-life bloody Johnson County War of 1892. Also starring Isabelle Huppert and Christopher Walken, "Heaven's Gate" is a savage and ravishingly shot demystification of WSestern movie lore. This is the full director's cut, letting viewers today see Cimino's potent original vision. New, restored transfer of director Michael Cimino's cut of the film, supervised by Cimino. New restoration of the 5.1 surround soundtrack, supervised by Cimino, in DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray edition. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray Disc.
