Warner Archive Collection New Releases: Conspiracies of Love

warner5-16SEVEN DAYS IN MAY (1964) New to Blu-ray with a 2017 1080p HD Remaster
This Cold War conspiracy classic is as perfectly pedigreed as a film could hope. Start with one daring, best-selling novel with a daring and frightening premise, add in an adaptation from screen scribe great Rod Serling, and layer in the measured hand of politico-social suspense master John Frankenheimer at the helm. Season with true cinema superstars Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Fredric March, and Ava Gardner. Finally, garnish with a great supporting cast, and serve up an instant classic. A Marine Corps colonel (Douglas) accidentally uncovers a plot by a popular, high-ranking general (Lancaster) to seize control of the government from a pacifist Prez (March). Perpetually contemporary, this film’s suspense and sly, thoughtful insights on duty and devotion make it a perennial must see – and now it’s sharper than ever in this great new 1080 HD edition on Blu-ray. Special Features: Commentary with director John Frankenheimer; Theatrical Trailer (HD). 16×9 Widescreen
THE LOVED ONE (1965) New to Blu-ray with a 2017 1080p HD Remaster
From an impeccable lineage – a novel by Evelyn Waugh, screenplay by Christopher Isherwood and Terry Southern – is born one of the maddest and blackest comedies the world has seldom seen. Director Tony Richardson assembles an all-star team around center player Robert Morse (Mad Men) in this look at the American way of death. Morse plays Dennis Barlow, a British would-be poet, who falls for comely funeral cosmetician Aimée Thanatogenos (Anjanette Comer) when attempting to send his uncle (John Gielgud) out in style via Reverend Glenworthy’s (Jonathan Winters) Whispering Glades cemetery and mortuary. In need of funds and desperate to stay close to the cosmetician, Dennis takes on work at the Reverend’s brother Henry’s (Winters, in a dual role) pet cemetery, and soon becomes embroiled in a plan to send the dearly departed to the stars. Originally advertised as “the motion picture with something to offend everyone!” Shot by the legendary Haskell Wexler, who also served as a producer. Also starring a sublime and shocking Rod Steiger and featuring Dana Andrews, James Coburn, Milton Berle, Tab Hunter, Roddy McDowall, and Liberace. Special Features: Featurette “Trying to Offend” (SD); Theatrical Trailer (HD). 16×9 Widescreen
THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST (1988) New to Blu-ray with a 2017 1080p HD Remaster
Ann Tyler’s best-selling novel provides fecund ground for Lawrence Kasdan’s impeccable and meticulous movie adaptation. William Hurt brings his considerable acting IQ to bear in his nuanced compelling portrayal of Macon Leary, a man severed from his own inner life thanks to a horrible tragedy, while Geena Davis more than earned the acclaim of peers and critics for her bravura performance as the quirky canine trainer that reconnects him to his heart. Hurt’s Body Heat co-star Kathleen Turner plays Macon’s suffering spouse who attempts to catalyze Macon back to life by walking out, while Amy Wright, David Ogden Stiers and Ed Begley, Jr. play the rest of the Baltimore Leary clan. Kasdan’s film is a worthy successor to the cinema of Buñuel and Ozu, mixing comedy and tragedy in equal measure in a world occupied not by heroes or villains, but just the walking wounded – and this new transfer stays true to cinematographer John Bailey’s sophisticated palette. Special Features: Introduction by Lawrence Kasdan; Scene Specific Commentary by Geena Davis; Featurette “It’s Like Life”; Lifted Scenes; Theatrical Trailer (HD). 16×9 Widescreen
