Warner Archive Collection New Release: Is Your Boy Friend Blu?

Working at the height of his formidable powers, cinema provocateur Ken Russell braids a whole new layer of story onto the original hit stage musical that made Julie Andrews a star and opens it up to some astonishing flights of fancy. Disaster looms for the Hollywood dreams of a small seaside theatre troupe when their lead actress (Glenda Jackson, in a cameo) takes ill. The  stage manager (Twiggy)for their musical production of The Boy Friend gamely dives in to save the show, while the rest of cast (and ousted actress) do all they can to attract the attention of visiting Hollywood producer, Mr. Cecil B. De Thrill. Wrapping a narrative frame around the original – a seaside theatrical company mounts a production of the ’20s musical spoof The Boy Friend – allows Russell, in turn, to explore and parody the conventions of ’30s musicals with elaborate fantasy sequences, slapstick, and sentiment. Also featuring Tommy Tune. This restored Director’s Cut/Roadshow presentation features an Intermission and Entr’acte, as Ken Russell intended the film to be seen. SPECIAL FEATURE: vintage “behind the scenes” making-of featurette.
