NOBODY WALKS IN LA is the story of two old friends who, faced with decisions that cannot wait,  put their lives on pause for a day and do the unthinkable … walk around Los Angeles.  Putting aside a failing engagement on the one hand and a cross country move on the other, Miles and Becca rediscover not just the streets of Los Angeles, but one another.

Becca is called over to Miles’ house by a mutual friend to snap him out of a shattered relationship. Abandoning cell phones and cars, they walk, Metro, bus, and bike through the neighborhoods of Los Angeles allowing people and events to carry them through their day. Becca’s dream of moving to New York and opening an art gallery is in doubt because of her guilt over leaving her widowed father alone. On the other hand she fears her presence might be keeping her father from moving on with his life.

Midway through the journey, Miles and Becca each reveal they had crushes on each other in high school – just at different times. Neither of them told the other because they didn’t want to risk ruining their friendship. The more they share, the more the nature of their relationship, past and present, comes into play. Miles not only questions whether he ever really knew his fiancé – but whether you can truly know anyone.

When Becca runs into an old acquaintance, Miles’ jealousy provokes an angry conversation about religion that quickly gets personal. Miles questions Becca’s ability to truly be an artist and Becca questions Miles’ ability to deal with life and be a man. Ultimately their argument only brings them closer together – each revealing another piece of themselves.

Nighttime finds them riding all over LA on bicycles until their journey ends where it began. Although the same issues that initiated their journey remain, a romantic kiss at the end of night leaves them with yet one more question: the nature of their relationship.

A STATEMENT FROM THE DIRECTOR

This film is my love letter to Los Angeles. The city serves as both foreground and background to the story of two friends sorting out their lives and relationships. Much of Miles and Becca’s conversation represent my thoughts, questions, and concerns about life, love, family, religion, and friendship. I attempted to represent those internal thoughts and questions as honestly and accurately as possible with dialogue that truly represents my generation and how my friends and I talk to one another.

As a native Angeleno this film grew from my desire to show a different side of Los Angeles. Leaving for college and traveling abroad made me realize how much this city is wholly equated with Hollywood and glamour – and if not that – with cop shows, gangs, and violence. There is so much that exists between these two extremes that is rarely, if ever, addressed in movies or television.

Real people live in LA too. Yet the majority of ‘indie’ films or hip TV shows that takes place in LA have the requisite ‘down on his luck’, ‘struggling actor’ character.

Neighborhoods in LA such as Koreatown, Downtown, Echo Park, and Silverlake have transformed in the last fifteen years. But when I turn on the television all I see is Beverly Hills, the Santa Monica Pier, and Downtown (playing a different city of course).

A city is a living, breathing organism that changes with time. I believe it’s time for people’s perceptions of Los Angeles to catch up with its current reality. I hope this film allows people to see, hear, and feel Los Angeles like they never have before. I want it to inspire people to become one with this city and all it has to offer – its people, its art, its music, its history . . . and its sidewalks.
