Special Interest:

There’s two interesting documentaries from Music Box Films this week:

photo for Code Black“Code Black” (2015): In his vivid and thought-provoking filmmaking debut, physician Ryan McGarry gives us unprecedented access to America’s busiest Emergency Department. Amidst real life-and-death situations, McGarry follows a dedicated team of charismatic, young doctors-in training as they wrestle openly with both their ideals and with the realities of saving lives in a complex and overburdened system. Their training ground and source of inspiration is “C-Booth,” Los Angeles County Hospital’s legendary trauma bay, the birthplace of Emergency Medicine, where “more people have died and more people have been saved than in any other square footage in the United States.” The documentary offers a tense, doctor’s-eye view, right into the heart of the health care debate — bringing us face to face with America’s only 24/7 safety net.

“Watchers of the Sky” (2014): “Why is the killing of a million a lesser crime than the killing of an individual?” With that provocative question, Raphael Lemkin — the Polish-Jewish lawyer and linguist who coined the term genocide — changed the course of history. Directed by Edet Belzberg, this documentary looks back on impassioned visionary Lemkin as he confronts world apathy in a tireless battle for justice, setting the stage for the creation of the International Criminal Court. Belzberg examines historical events from Nuremberg to Rwanda, from Bosnia to Darfur, and from apathy to action. Inspired by Samantha Power’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book “A Problem From Hell.”
