In Search of Kundun with Martin Scorsese is a deeply insightful film documenting the unique encounter of filmmaker Martin Scorsese (The Irishman, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver) with the Tibetan people and their spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama. Filmed in 1997, this emotional saga takes us from the set of Kundun in Morocco, where Scorsese recreates the vanishing Tibetan culture, to the foothills of the Himalayas in Dharamsala, India at the Dalai Lama’s residence-in-exile. His Holiness reminisces about his youth, the plight of Tibet, and offers a vision for the future. Director Michael Henry Wilson skillfully weaves together rare archival footage of Tibet with behind-the-scenes commentary by Martin Scorsese, screenwriter Melissa Mathison, cinematographer Roger Deakins, production designer Dante Ferretti and Tibetan cast members with no previous acting experience who convey poignant real life perspectives on an epic journey.

Language: English and Mandarin with English subtitles

Set in a mining town in the 1880s, Thousand Pieces of Gold tells the real-life story of Lalu (Rosalind Chao, The Laundromat, The Joy Luck Club), a young Chinese woman whose desperately poor parents sell her into slavery. She is trafficked to a nefarious saloonkeeper in Idaho’s gold country. Eventually Charlie, a man of a different ilk, played by Chris Cooper (Adaptation, American Beauty), wins her in a poker game and slowly gains her trust. Way ahead of its time, the film resonates even more powerfully in the #MeToo era. But director Nancy Kelly became a victim of prejudice against women directors within the American film industry and was never offered another movie to direct in spite of extraordinary reviews, some of which compared her talent to that of John Ford. Based on the classic novel by Ruthanne Lum McCunn, and written for the screen by award winning filmmaker Anne Makepeace (Tribal Justice), Thousand Pieces of Gold is a breathtaking feminist Western just waiting to be rediscovered, and is presented here in a new 4K restorabon.

Marihuana / Narcotic

(Forbidden Fruit Vol. 4)
Prebook Date: 4/7/20
Street Date: 5/5/20

Label: Kino Lorber
DVD SRP: 29.95
DVD Item #: K24687
DVD UPC: 738329246877
Genre: Documentary
Year: 2019
Rating: NR
Runtime: 73
Director: Dwain Esper
Actors: Harley Woods, Patrick Caryle, Harry Cording, Joan Dix, J. Stuart Blackton Jr.
Language: English

Dwain Esper was not only one of the most notorious figures of the exploitation genre (due to his ruthless business practices) he was also its greatest stylist. With an utter disregard for the laws of cinematic convention, his low-budget films verge on the avant-garde as they breathlessly wallow in every conceivable moral vice-all in the name of public education, of course. Marihuana follows the downward trajectory of a bright high school girl (Harley Woods) who dabbles in cannabis and becomes a hardened, heroin-addicted criminal, who inadvertently kidnaps her own child (whom she had given up for adoption). Inspired by a true story, Narcotic is the story of an idealistic physician (Harry Cording) whose personal journey leads him through opium dens, carnival tents, sex-crazed drug parties, skid-row brothels, and eventually the halls of madness.

Bonus Features: Audio commentary for Marihuana by Bret Wood, co-author of Forbidden Fruit: The Golden Age of the Exploitation Film; audio commentary by producer David F. Friedman and Something Weird founder Mike Vraney (2000); audio commentary for Narcotic by Bret Wood; theatrical trailers; two versions of Dwain Esper’s How to Undress (in Front of Your Husband); Dwain Esper’s How to Take a Bath, trailer and fragments of Dwain Esper’s lost film The Seventh Commandment (1932)

Exploitation films of the 1930s didn’t only warn citizens of the dangers of drugs and venereal disease. The genre brazenly confronted on a wide array of distasteful issues, as evidenced in this double feature of two of the most bizarre entries in the exploitation canon. Tomorrow’s Children is an exposé of eugenics, in which a young woman (Diane Sinclair) from a family of genetic degenerates is ordered by the court to be sterilized. Notorious even by today’s standards, Child Bride follows a crusading schoolteacher (Diana Durrell) as she tries to halt the practice of child marriage in a backwoods community, before it claims another innocent victim (Shirley Mills).

Despite his family’s hardship under successive Soviet and German occupations, Lipke embarked on a covert operation to save local Jews from Nazi persecution and certain death, moving them from the Riga ghetto to an underground bunker hidden on his property. From the start, filmmaker Davis Simanis creates a powerfully ominous and suspenseful atmosphere, positioning the viewer, like Lipke, as a reluctant eyewitness to unfolding horrors.

The Competition begins, significantly, with the image of a locked gate-that of La Fémis, one of the most prestigious film schools in the world, offering hands-on training from working professionals and accepting only forty students per year from hundreds of applicants. This Frederick Wiseman-esque documentary from Claire Simon, one of France’s premiere nonfiction filmmakers, observes the process whereby those lucky forty are selected-a process which is revealed to be highly personal, idiosyncratic, and subject to the vagaries of taste and personal prejudice. Funny, penetrating, and surprisingly suspenseful, The Competition offers not only a unique opportunity to see the inner workings of an institution at the very heart of the French film industry, but an invitation to look at the assumptions and roadblocks that shape any national film industry, and higher education in general.

Language: Mutliple with English subtitles

In the summer of 1973, a young international crew of six women and five men embarked together on a most unusual sea voyage-a close-quarters trip across the Atlantic from Spain to Mexico on a free-floating raft christened the Acali, initiated by Mexican anthropologist Santiago Genovés, who proposed to use the group as guinea pigs in his investigation of the origins of violent conflict and dynamics of sexual attraction. Contentious from the get-go, incorrectly labeled by the media as ‘The Sex Raft,’ the Acali mission stayed afloat for 101 days-and now, more than forty years later, the surviving crew members reunite to reenact and recollect their experience, additionally illustrated with extensive 16mm archival footage from the voyage. What results is a document of the thin line between science and cultism in the early ’70s, a touching story of female camaraderie and, in the character of Genovés, an unforgettable portrait of oblivious, toxic masculinity.

One of the treasures of African cinema, Senegalese master Djibril Diop Mambéty’s long-delayed follow-up to his canonical Touki Bouki (1973) is a hallucinatory comic adaptation of Swiss avant-garde writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s play The Visit, which in Mambéty’s imagining follows a now-rich woman returning to her poor desert hometown to propose a deal to the populace: her fortune, in exchange for the death of the man who years earlier abandoned her and left her with his child. Per its title, Hyenas is a film of sinister, mocking laughter, and a biting satire of a contemporary Senegal whose post-colonial dreams are faced with erosion by western materialism. Essayist, novelist, critic, cinephile, and all-around intellectual dynamo Susan Sontag made her directorial debut with this definition-defying, dryly funny psychological serio-comedy, the result of a Swedish studio’s invitation to her to make a film in Stockholm. The result, revolving around the quadrangular relationship between an arrogant ex-revolutionist German intellectual exile, his elegant wife, their Swedish student secretary, and the earnest secretary’s bride-to-be, is a roundelay of partner-swapping that gradually drifts towards uncharted territory, gamesmanship that broaches the surreal and violent. Defying literal-minded interpretation, Duet for Cannibals is both an illustrative companion to Sontag’s criticism and the introduction of a startlingly original filmmaker.

violence. He soon learns of an ancient Jewish law, the Law of the Pursuer, that he believes gives him the right to murder Yitzhak Rabin.
