This November, Criterion will bring home the laughs as they introduce two Oscar-winning Hollywood comedy classics, one from the golden age, the other from the 80s, to the collection: Frank Capra’s best-picture-winning “It Happened One Night,” the Clark Gable–Claudette Colbert road-trip romance that effectively kicked off the American screwball comedy genre; and Sydney Pollack’s brilliantly uproarious “Tootsie,” starring Dustin Hoffman as an out-of-work actor who disguises himself as a woman to land a plum soap-opera role. Then saddle up for two arresting, eccentric 60s westerns in one package: “The Shooting” and “Ride in the Whirlwind,” both directed by Monte Hellman and starring a young Jack Nicholson. And sink your teeth into “Les Blank: Always for Pleasure,” a collector’s set of films by the late, great American documentarian, who made intimate, unique films of all flavors — often about food and music — for almost half a century. All this plus a new edition of Michelangelo Antonioni’s masterpiece “L’avventura,” including its first ever Blu-ray release in the United States.
