Criterion January Releases

SS_BitterTears_01The New Year kicks off with a selection of titles that speaks to the breadth and variety, and vitality, of The Criterion Collection. These films hail from around the world: Germany (“The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant,” Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s masterful evocation of doomed obsession), Argentina (“La cienaga,” Lucrecia Martel’s stunning debut, a unique tale of bourgeois torpor), Canada (“My Winnipeg,” Guy Maddin’s fantastical sort-of documentary about his snowbound hometown), and the United States (“The Palm Beach Story,” a Hollywood screwball comedy par excellence from the unimpeachable Preston Sturges). Plus, Criterion is bringing back the intense samurai classic “The Sword of Doom,” with superstars Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai, in a new Blu-ray edition.

January 6: The Sword of Doom (1966)
January 13: The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972)
January 20: My Winnipeg (2007)
