The Iguana With the Tongue of Fire (1971 -- Italy) One of several "animal-in-the-title" cash-ins released in the wake of Dario Argento's box-office smash "The Bird With the Crystal Plumage," this gloriously excessive giallo boasts a rogues gallery of perverse characters; photo for The Iguana With the Tongue of Fireviolent, fetishized murders, and one of the genre's most nonsensical, red-herring laden plots (which sees almost every incidental character hinted at potentially being the killer). Set in Dublin (a rather surprising giallo setting), the film opens audaciously with an acid-throwing, razor-wielding maniac brutally slaying a woman in her own home. The victim's mangled corpse is discovered in a limousine owned by Swiss Ambassador Sobiesky (Anton Diffring) and a police investigation is launched, but when the murdering continues and the ambassador claims diplomatic immunity, tough ex-cop John Norton (Luigi Pistilli) is brought in to find the killer. Benefitting from a sumptuous score by Stelvio Cipriani and exuberant supporting performances from Valentina Cortese and Dagmar Lassander, "The Iguana With the Tongue of Fire" is a luridly over-the-top latter-day entry in the filmography of acclaimed director Riccardo Freda. New 2K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative. Formats: Blu-ray. Extras: New audio commentary by giallo connoisseurs Adrian J. Smith and David Flint; "Of Chameleons and Iguanas," a newly filmed video appreciation by the cultural critic and academic Richard Dyer; "Considering Cipriani," a new appreciation of the composer Stelvio Cipriani and his score to "The Iguana With the Tongue of Fire" by DJ and soundtrack collector Lovely Jon; "The Cutting Game," a new interview with "Iguana’s" assistant editor Bruno Micheli; "The Red Queen of Hearts," a career-spanning interview with the actress Dagmar Lassander; original Italian and international theatrical trailers; image gallery; reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Graham Humphreys; collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Andreas Ehrenreich. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray. (Dark Sky Films).

photo for Melo Melo (1986 -- France) Master director Alain Resnais ("Last Year At Marienbad") blurs the line between cinematic technique and theatrical artifice in his acclaimed "Mélo," adapted from Henri Bernstein's classic play about a doomed love triangle in 1920s Paris. Pierre (Pierre Arditi) and Marcel (André Dussollier) are both celebrated concert violinists and lifelong friends, in spite of their differing temperaments. Pierre is modest, sensitive and content with his lot; Marcel is hungry, driven, and pursues a solo career that takes him to the four corners of the world. After years apart, the two friends reunite when Pierre invites Marcel to his home for dinner. It is then that Marcel first meets Pierre's wife Romaine (Sabine Azéma), sparking a passionate affair that can only end in tragedy before the curtain falls. As thrillingly intimate on film as it was on the stage, "Mélo's" César award-winning cast and inventive direction are highlighted in a stunning new restoration, revealing a hidden gem in Resnais' celebrated body of work waiting to be rediscovered. Brand new 2K restoration of the film. Formats: Blu-ray. Moynihan (2018) Daniel Patrick Moynihan (1927-2003) did not just live in the 20th century, he strode across it: a colossus of ideas and a man of deeds. He was an influential intellectual and sociologist, policy specialist, ambassador and long-serving senator. In an age of rigid ideologies, he was a man who embraced the contradictions and complexity of public policy without ever despairing of the role of government in the lives of its citizens. Fifteen years after his death, as the nation sinks further into hyper-partisanship and politics has become dominated by the frenzy of social media, the first feature length documentary about his life captures Moynihan as never before. Formats: DVD, Digital. (First Run Features).

photo for Night on Earth (1991) Five cities. Five taxicabs. A multitude of strangers in the night. Jim Jarmusch assembled an extraordinary international cast of actors (including Gena Rowlands, Winona Ryder, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Beatrice Dalle, and Roberto Benigni) for this quintet of transitory tales of urban displacement and existential angst, all staged as encounters between cabbies and their fares. Spanning time zones, continents, and languages, "Night on Earth" winds its course through scenes of uproarious comedy, nocturnal poetry, and somber fatalism, set to a moody soundtrack by Tom Waits. Jarmusch’s lovingly askew view of humanity from the passenger seat makes for one of his most charming and beloved films, a freewheeling showcase for the cosmopolitan range of his imagination. On DVD and Blu-ray, with High-definition digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Jim Jarmusch, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray. Extras: Selected-scene commentary from 2007 featuring director of photography Frederick Elmes and location sound mixer Drew Kunin; Q&A with Jarmusch from 2007, in which he responds to questions sent in by fans; Belgian television interview with Jarmusch from 1992; A booklet featuring essays by authors and critics Thom Andersen, Paul Auster, Bernard Eisenschitz, Goffredo Fofi, and Peter von Bagh, and the lyrics to Tom Waits’s original songs from the film. Allen Hynek. A brilliant college professor, Hynek is recruited by the U.S. Air Force to spearhead a clandestine operation, code-named Project Blue Book, which investigates UFO sightings and alleged extraterrestrial encounters. Each episode draws from those actual case files, blending UFO theories with authentic historical events from one of the most mysterious eras in United States history. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray, Digital. (Lionsgate).

Soldier of War (aka Aux) (2018) John Rhys-Davies, Tanya Franks, Rosie Fellner. Deep in the forest, two boys discover the entrance to a secret military bunker hidden since World War II and inadvertently awaken an undead soldier, who embarks on a grotesque, ritualistic killing spree. A police investigation begins, but one by one the police and other locals are murdered. Only a World War II veteran holds the secret to stop the killings, but will anybody believe him? Formats: DVD, VOD. (Uncork’d Entertainment).

photo for Stranger Than Paradise (1994) With this breakout film, Jim Jarmusch established himself as one of the most exciting voices in the burgeoning independent-film scene, a road-movie poet with an affinity for Americana at its most offbeat. Jarmusch follows rootless Hungarian émigré Willie (John Lurie), his pal Eddie (Richard Edson), and his visiting 16-year-old cousin Eva (Eszter Balint) as they drift from New York’s Lower East Side to the snowy expanses of Lake Erie and the drab beaches of Florida, always managing to make the least of wherever they end up. Structured as a series of master-shot vignettes etched in black and white by cinematographer Tom DiCillo, "Stranger Than Paradise" is a nonchalant masterpiece of deadpan comedy and perfectly calibrated minimalism. On DVD and Blu-ray, with high-definition digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Jim Jarmusch, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray. Extras: "Permanent Vacation" (1980, 75 minutes), Jarmusch’s first full-length feature, presented in a high-definition digital restoration supervised by the director; "Kino ’84: Jim Jarmusch," a 1984 German television program featuring interviews with cast and crew from "Stranger Than Paradise" and "Permanent Vacation"; "Some Days in January, 1984," a behind-the-scenes Super 8 film by Tom Jarmusch; U.S. and Japanese trailers; a booklet featuring Jarmusch’s 1984 “Some Notes on Stranger Than Paradise,” critics Geoff Andrew and J.
