THE LAW AND JAKE WADE (1958) New to Blu-ray with a 2017 1080p HD Remaster
A pair of acting titans team up with director John Sturges for this lean and mean duel in the sun Western. A good sheriff with a bad secret (Robert Taylor) squares off against his nemesis, a bad man that shares that same secret (Richard Widmark). Although far from revisionist, the efficiency with which the film hits its marks, thanks to Sturges ruthless efficiency and cinematographer Robert Surtees ability to place the personal within the sweeping sagebrush scope, places it high in the Western pantheon. Taylor is all tight lipped and laconic, while Widmark returns to his superb sneering villain stylings and the pair are supported by a great ensemble that includes Patricia Owens, Robert Middleton, Henry Silva and DeForest Kelley all in service to a great story that combines jailbreaks, epic journey, night time sieges and ghost town duels without wasting a frame. And now, thanks to this sparkling new transfer, all the colors and grit have never looked better. 16×9 Letterbox

Realizing he does not have the dough-re-mi, Jack tries to leave when Sheba defiantly enters a “knees contest” judged by gentlemanly gangster Nicky Solomon (Chester Morris). Nicky selects Sheba for the silver cup by slipping a garter on her thigh, and the rest is sparks and swoons. Sheba promptly defies Pa, leaves Jack in the cold and hitches her star to Nicky. But the smooth-talker has a secret… he has less jack than Jack, and is desperate to do anything to change that – including robbing Pa’s cigar store! Directed by Mervyn LeRoy.
