Warner Archive New Releases: The Life and Times of Seaman Billy Budd .. and More

Herman Melville, Robert Ryan, Terrence Stamp, Paul Newman, Ava Gardner, Linda Lavin, Burt Reynolds, Yahoo Serious, Chris Farley and Jennifer Lawrence

The remarkable Peter Ustinov co-wrote, produced and directed this adaptation of the Herman Melville classic, that co-stars an equally remarkable cast. As H.M.S. Avenger heads into battle against the French fleet during the Napoleonic Wars, the dark shadow of two recent mutinies in the English fleet concerns Captain Vere (Peter Ustinov). He relies on his cruel and often sadistic Master-at-Arms, John Claggert (Robert Ryan), to maintain the tenuous order and discipline aboard the ship. When a new seaman, Billy Budd (Terence Stamp), is pressed into service from a passing merchantman, his innocent, happy-go-lucky attitude quickly endears him to both his messmates as well as the ship’s officers. However, his charismatic naiveté bothers Claggert, whose perverse depravity drives him to treat Billy in such a way that threatens to engulf the ship in mutiny and murder. Also starring Melvyn Douglas and David McCallum. Truly underrated and overlooked at the time of its release, Ustinov’s signal cinematic achievement – and Robert Krasker’s luminous cinematography – is fully revealed on this scintillating Blu-ray disc presentation in jaw-dropping, glorious Black and White. Special Feature: Commentary by Terence Stamp and Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh; HD Trailer. 16×9 Letterbox
A personal passion project of star Paul Newman, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean delivers up a revisionist take on the revisionist Western during a time when all of cinema was revising itself. This laconic and humanist take on the larger-than-life legends of the West, combined with Newman’s low-brow commedia approach to Judge Bean is now considered an ahead of its time triumph. Director John Huston and writer John Milius, two creators of the decidedly machismo school, slow things down and poke holes in the apparatus of masculine myth-making in this sprawling road show. Featuring Anthony Perkins, Tab Hunter, Victoria Principal, Roddy McDowall, John Huston (as Grizzly Adams!), Anthony Zerbe, Jacqueline Bisset, Ned Beatty, Stacy Keach and Ava Gardner as Lily Langtry. 16×9 Widescreen
