THE SEA WOLF (1941) New to Blu-ray & DVD with a 2017 4K Scan from Original Nitrate Elements
Restored to its original theatrical length for the first time in over 75 years! Warner Bros. assembled an all-star team of A-listers including Michael Curtiz, Edward G. Robinson, John Garfield and Ida Lupino to tackle the silver screen adaptation of Jack London’s dark adventure novel of the sea, survival and the Nietzschean Superman. Robert Rossen’s script turned London’s critique of the selfish Ubermenschian philosophy into an outright torpedoing of the Fascist temperament. Adroitly splitting London’s milquetoast protagonist in two – Alexander Knox as the autodidact shanghaied bosun and John Garfield as working-class rebel sailor – Rossen was able to amp up the adventure and romance without losing The Sea Wolf’s dark roots. Unfortunately, when the hit film was re-released near the end of the decade, its run-time was truncated by 14 minutes and that footage has remained elusive – until now! Restored and remastered from nitrate elements, The Sea Wolf‘s glorious Black and White cinematography is a wonder to behold, firmly placing this film back in the pantheon of truly classic Warner Bros. motion pictures. Wolf Larsen (Robinson) is an iron-willed and ruthless sea captain who rules his ship, The Ghost, as its capricious and cruel god. Pursued by his vengeance seeking brother, Death Larsen, Wolf gets swept up in a dance of doom with two castaways (Lupino and Knox) and a fierce fighting crewman (Garfield).
THE GREEN SLIME (1968) New to Blu-ray with a 2017 1080p HD Remaster
The brains behind Batman, Battle Royale and Wild, Wild Planet join forces in this Japano-Italo-American Sci-Fi Horror camp classic that underscores the importance of wiping your feet. Ivan Reiner, chief writer on the famed “Gamma One” quadrilogy (Wild, Wild Planet, War of the Planets, War Between the Planets and The Snow Devils ) and his co-writer on The Snow Devils, the legendary Bat-scribe Bill Finger, team up with the legendary Kinji Fukasaku to direct this “Gamma One Plus” tale that was an instant mondo cinesensation. After a perilous mission to blow up a huge Earth-bound asteroid, a crew returns to its space station, unaware a bit of ooze from the surface clings to a crewman’s uniform. The green goop grows into murderous tentacled monsters whose festering wounds turn into more monsters! And this slime glows like never before thanks to this pristine 1080p presentation that reveals the film’s long hidden secret – behind the wires and latex there lurks a mini-masterpiece of swinging sixties pop-art direction! With Robert Horton, Richard Jaeckel and Luciana Paluzzi. 16×9 Letterbox
