wind-evergladesWIND ACROSS THE EVERGLADES (1958) Nicholas Ray directs a film debuting Christopher Plummer in this wild “Eastern” set in the early days of Miami. Plummer plays Audubon Marshall Walt Murdock who is on a collision course with Cottonmouth (Burl Ives), king of the swamp rats who hunt Florida’s exotic birds to near extinction in order to provide plumage to high society, Murdock aims to curtail Cottonmouth and co. by hell or high water. But the two foes share a grudging…and fatal respect for one another (it’s a Nicholas Ray film…). Costarring Gypsy Rose Lee, Peter Falk and Emmett Kelly. Newly remastered. 16×9 Widescreen

The Queen of Broadway: Helen Hayes

ANOTHER LANGUAGE (1933) Helen Hayes plays a free-spirited Bohemian who elopes with an encharmed Robert Montgomery only to discover she’s hitched herself to more than she bargained for – his entire sprawling, suffocating family. And at the top of the alienation pole is hubby’s dear old mom, who will never approve of the bride’s boho ways. Adapted from the play by Rose Franken, with original cast members Margaret Hamilton and John Beal making their big-screen debuts.

WHAT EVERY WOMAN KNOWS (1934) J.M Barrie’s unusual domestic comedy comes to the big screen under the direction of Gregory La Cava. Hayes plays 26-year-old ‘spinster’ Maggie Wylie whose family traps a desperate book thief with an offer he can’t refuse. They’ll bankroll his dreams if he promises to wed Maggie when he achieves them. Five years later, the young B&E scholar becomes John Shand, MP. And as his self-esteem swells, so too does his regard for a local Lady (Madge Evans). But brash John Shands may be blind to what his marriage to Maggie really means.

VANESSA: HER LOVE STORY (1935) Helen Hayes and Robert Montgomery re-team for this sweeping historical epic set amidst England’s storied Lake District. They play Vanessa Paris and Benjie Herries, a truly star-crossed pair of lovers. Her heart set on the wild Gypsy-blooded Benjie since childhood, Vanessa’s dreams are dashed when she unfairly blames Benjie for the death of her father. This grief-stricken decision sends the pair down a perilous path of malicious marriage, madness, scandal and death.
