Kinetta is a perversely fascinating early feature from director Yorgos Lanthimos, who would later go on to international renown with Dogtooth, Alps, and The Favourite. It is set at a desolate Greek resort town where a bored chambermaid (Evangelia Randou, Attenberg) forms a bizarre trio with a control freak detective (Costas Xikominos) and an eccentric photo shop clerk (Aris Servetalis, Alps). Together they stage re-enactments of the murders of a local serial killer. What at first seems to be an investigative experiment turns out to be more of an exploration into the depths of their own psychosexual obsessions. As provocative and thought-provoking as his more famous work, Kinetta is essential to understanding one of the greatest artists of his generation.

Extremely disciplined, principled, and prolific, Still left behind a treasure trove of works like no other major artist in history. Compassion in Exile

Rating: NR
Runtime: 957
Director: Mickey Lemle
Actors: Dalai Lama, Heinrich Harrer
Language: English and Tibetan

Compassion in Exile is an intimate portrait of Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet. Inherent in the life story of this Nobel Peace Prize laureate is the saga of the suffering of the Tibetan people under Chinese occupation. For over fifty years the Dalai Lama has waged a non-violent struggle in exile to bring attention to the plight of his people and save their unique culture and religion. He is the embodiment of the ideal of his Buddhist heritage and practice, and his life story is an inspiring lesson in compassion, humor and peace. For this film, the Dalai Lama personally granted director Mickey Lemle unprecendented access and cooperation.

With candor and humor, he describes his upbringing and key moments in his life, detailing historic events including his becoming head of state at the age of sixteen, journeying to Beijing at nineteen to confront Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, and fleeing to India at twenty. Using historic and some never- before-seen footage, and with an entrancing score by Philip Glass, his remarkable story is also told by the people closest to him, including his older brother, his sister, and Heinrich Harrer (his childhood tutor and the author of Seven Years in Tibet).

For over a thousand years, Tibetan Buddhist psychology has taught techniques for overcoming negative emotions, such as anger, greed, jealousy, sloth and ignorance. In the inquisitive documentary The Last Dalai Lama?, directed by Mickey Lemle (Compassion in Exile, Ram Dass: Fierce Grace) His Holiness explains that Tibetan Buddhism is both a religion and a “science of the mind”; he also shares his crystallized understanding of the nature of mind, and its part in the creation and alleviation of all of our suffering. His urgency and dedication come through as he now turns 82, and must deal with the questions of aging and death, and whether he will reincarnate as The Dalai Lama, or if he will be the last of the lineage that has existed for a millennia.

After years of relative obscurity, Alice Guy Blaché is now being recognized for her role in the development of the cinematic arts. Beginning as a typist for the Gaumont Company, she volunteered to produce a series of novelty films. So successful were her films-and so efficient her methods-she eventually became the studio’s head of production. During cinema’s first decade, the multi-talented Guy Blaché experimented with color and synchronized sound (decades before these technologies would be perfected) and cultivated such diverse genres as slapstick comedy, social realism, historical epic, and fantasy. Though rooted in the theatrical style of the Belle Époque, there is a decidedly modern sensibility to her films, as she playfully discovers comic and dramatic potential in the social mores of gender and class. This collection includes films made directly by Guy Blaché at Gaumont, as well a sampling of films produced by others, under her executive supervision (for example, The Birth, the Life, and Death of Christ, 1906).

* Booklet essay by film historian Kim Tomadjoglou

Having pioneered the art and technology of cinema during its infancy (organizing a system of film production at the Gaumont Studios in France), Alice Guy Blaché moved to the United States where she co-founded the Solax Company, where she served as head of production. Enjoying complete creative freedom, she explored long-form storytelling, alternating between serious dramatizations of the early 20th-century American experience (Making an American Citizen, The Strike, Frozen on Love’s Trail) and playful experiments in melodrama (The Detective’s Dog). Produced more than a century ago, Guy Blaché’s films maintain their power to surprise the viewer, with moments of unexpected pathos and irreverent humor (the ribald cross-dressing comedies Officer Henderson and Cousins of Sherlocko). This collection is truly an international endeavor-2K and 4K restorations from materials preserved by the Library of Congress, British Film Institute, EYE Film Institute, George Eastman Museum, the Academy Film Library, Lobster Films, and others-and is essential viewing for anyone interested in the evolution of the industry and the art form.

Most commonly known as the principle screenwriter for ill-fated director William Desmond Taylor, publicity-shy Julia Crawford Ivers was a filmmaker of diverse talents, working as director, scenarist, production supervisor, and editor at Paramount. This collection showcases two of Ivers’s directorial efforts: A Son of Erin (1916) and The Majesty of the Law (1915, of which only a single reel survives). But the centerpiece is The Intrigue (1916, directed by Frank Lloyd) a sci-fi/espionage film in which world powers vie for control of a death ray during World War I. Through these meticulous restorations of films preserved by the Library of Congress, the woman once known as “Lady in the Shadows” can now finally receive the attention her work so richly deserves.

Cast: Wendy Brown, Silvia Federici, George A. Papandreou
Language:English

For five decades Tony Buba has chronicled the industrial decline of his hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania with bleakly disarming humor and a boldly self-reflexive style.
Kino Lorber and Zeitgeist Films are proud to present a two-disc collection of his newly restored films starting with his 1970s shorts and working its way through his feature-length masterpiece Lightning Over Braddock: A Rust Bowl Fantasy (1988) and on into his essential recent work. In Lightning Over Braddock, Buba plays himself as a struggling director trying to make a feature with narcissistic conman Sal (subject of the short Sweet Sal), but never manages to leave Braddock, where factories keep closing despite the heroic efforts of local unions. With its mix of politically potent documentary portraiture and hilarious comic re-enactments, it’s an uncategorizable work of art that has had a vast, if underground, influence on the future of documentary, anticipating the work of everyone from Michael Moore to The Daily Show.

In 1981, writer and Warhol associate Glenn O’Brien, Swiss photographer Edo Bertoglio, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, a graffiti innovator and noise music artist who’d just begun to exhibit his paintings, hit the streets of lower Manhattan to make a movie about the bombed out bohemia that they knew, with a script by O’Brien, Bertoglio directing, and Basquiat, a naturally compelling presence, starring. Left incomplete due to money problems and assembled for release in 2000, Downtown 81, which follows Basquiat trying to move a painting while hustling for a place to sleep, became a window on a lost world of life on the margins and crazy creative ferment. Featuring John Lurie, Fab Five Freddy, and Debbie Harry, with musical performances by DNA, James White and the Blacks, and Kid Creole and the Coconuts — and Manhattan in all its mangy glory.

The Home of the Bleeding Heart for Orphans is more like a prison than a home for orphans. Run by the tyrannical Sister Serena (Anne De Salvo, Arthur, Taking Care of Business) and her eccentric assistant Mr. Kurtz (Murphy Dunne, The Blues Brothers, Blues Brothers 2000), it doesn’t take the inmates long to hatch an escape plan.
