Documentary / 93 min / NR / Color

Director: Tony Zierra
Starring: Leon Vitali, Ryan O’Neal, Danny Lloyd

That first encounter with the famed auteur proved decisive – he swiftly resolved to devote the rest of his life working for the director, this time behind the scenes, and took on just about every job available: casting director, acting coach, location scout, sound engineer, color corrector, A.D., promoter, and eventually restorer of Kubrick’s films. Tony Zierra’s affecting documentary Filmworker enthusiastically recounts Vitali’s days with the notoriously meticulous, volatile and obsessive director. The experiences brought both tremendous sacrifice and glowing pride. The People Speak

DVD Street Date: September 11, 2018
DVD SRP: $29.95

Documentary / 113 min / NR / Color

Director: Anthony Arnove, Chris Moore
Starring: Josh Brolin, Matt Damon, Marisa Tomei

Synopsis: The People Speak is a beautiful and moving film inspired by Howard Zinn’s books A People’s History of the United States — first published in 1980 and one of the best-selling history books in the United States — and Voices of a People’s History of the United States, the primary-source companion to A People’s History of the United States, edited with Anthony Arnove. The film features the actual words (in letters, songs, poems, speeches, and manifestos) of rebels, dissenters, and visionaries from our past-and present-including Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Bob Dylan, Langston Hughes, Chief Joseph, Muhammad Ali, and unknown veterans, union workers, abolitionists, and many others never featured in high school textbooks. Like Howard Zinn’s work as a whole, The People Speak celebrates the extraordinary possibilities for creating social change that ordinary people have realized throughout the course of our nation’s rich but often ignored history of dissent and protest.

Joaquim Pedro de Andrade: The Complete Films (3-Disc Blu-ray)

Blu-ray Street Date: September 25, 2018
Blu-ray SRP: $59.95

Comedy / 680 min / NR / Color

Director: Joaquim Pedro De Andrade

Synopsis: Joaquim Pedro de Andrade was one of the most important figures in the Cinema Novo movement that transformed Brazilian cinema in the 1960s and ’70s. Kino Classics is proud to present his complete films on Blu-ray, restored in 2K. Hailing from a culturally prominent family in Rio de Janeiro, Andrade grew up in close contact with some of the country’s greatest artists, writers, and scholars. Abandoning his university education to pursue filmmaking, he would soon find himself at the heart of the proliferation of formally and politically audacious filmmaking that comprised Cinema Novo. Like those of his fellow Cinema Novo-associated filmmakers, such as Glauber Rocha and Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Andrade’s films combined a sophisticated, modernist formal approach with an uncompromisingly political, often outrageous, and uniquely Brazilian sensibility that makes his work every bit as vital today as it was in the 1960s and ’70s.

Regina Jonas, the daughter of an Orthodox Jewish peddler, grew up in Berlin’s slum, studied at the liberal College for the Scientific Study of Judaism beginning in 1924, and was ordained in 1935. Her sermons brought encouragement to the persecuted German Jews. At age 37, she met the love of her life, Rabbi Josef Norden. Both of them were deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp. Only their love letters survived the Holocaust.
