Description: This delightful animated adventure featuring Beardsley-esque Peter Max portraits follows the psychedelic adventures of the Beatles (voiced by actors) as they attempt to save the good folk of Pepperland from the despicable Blue Meanies. The Blue Meanies hate color and music and they "freeze" the Pepperland denizens in a blue-gray world using a variety of weird weapons and surreal creatures. Only the color and music of the Beatles can save the day, and they voyage from London in their fabulous Yellow Submarine armed with a cache of songs: "Yellow Submarine," "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," "When I'm Sixty-Four," "Eleanor Rigby," "Nowhere Man," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," "Only a Northern Song," "All Together Now," "It's All Too Much," "All You Need Is Love" and added song "Hey Bulldog."

Submerge yourself in the wild color and images of a time when people really thought that "All You Need Is Love" to overcome adversity. But beware: if you haven't seen the film before, you may be disappointed by the flat images (when compared to today's brand of CG animation) and the witty, talky Beatles' humor (which was more apropos to the live-action "A Hard Day's Night" than an animated adventure). Still, it's the songs that hold the whole thing together, and they'll hold their greatness forever. If you were young then, but this to show to your kids. If you're young now, buy this for your kids. A must for any collection.

The extras here include "The Mod Odyssey," a behind-the-scenes feature; the original theatrical trailer, an audio commentary track (by John Coates, one of the animators, and designer Heinz Edelmann; behind-the-scenes photos taken from the making of the film; video and audio interviews with voice actors Paul Angelis and John Clive, animator David Livesey, co-writer Erich Segal, animation director Jack Stokes, and Edelmann; three storyboard sequences ("Battle of the Monsters," "Sea of the Monsters" and "Pepperland") and, of course, an isolated music only track highlighting the film's score.

Image: Though the picture has been digitally renovated -- frame by frame -- the colors still don't match the big screen version -- though that may be attributable to the viewing conditions in the psychedelic '60s.

Sound: The original mono soundtrack has been remixed into surround stereo to really blow your mind.

All DVDs are screened on a reference Onkyo DV- S717 third-generation DVD player.
