DVD Brief: The Parallax View |
|
Description: Oft-overlooked political thriller stars Beatty as a reporter investigating the assassination of a presidential candidate. He soon discovers that reporters and witnesses at the assassination are mysteriously dying and uncovers a widespread conspiracy implemented by the clandestine Parallax Corp., a secret organization that hires and trains assassins. With the help of his editor, Cronyn, he infiltrates the group, but gets much more than he bargained for. This mystery thriller has enough twists and turns to keep most viewers -- even those jaded by 1990s special effects-laden extravaganzas -- on the edge of their seats. Coming at the height of the conspiratorial mid-1970s (post-Kennedy/King/Kennedy assassinations, post-Watergate) the film captures a mood and time now only a distant memory. Highly recommended. Image: The widescreen image is a bit murky in places, with many scenes shoot indoors with apparent available light, fittingly corresponding to the dark and hidden agenda of the film's conspirators. Outdoors colors are crisp and bright. Sound: Despite that fact that many conversations are intentionally muffled, the sound is patchy and variable, with levels fluctuating wildly. Keep your fingers on the volume control for this one. All DVDs are screened on a reference Onkyo DV- S717 third-generation DVD player.
