DVD Brief: Bonnie and Clyde |
|
Description: This classic, landmark film gets a beautiful transfer to DVD by Warner Bros. Penn's mediation on anti-heroes and violence set the stage for a host of imitators and opened the door for more gruesome (and accurate) depictions of violence on the screen (most notably Sam Pekinpah's "The Wild Bunch"). A mix of drama and comedy, the film mythologizes Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, small-town crooks who went on a bank-robbing crime spree in Texas and Oklahoma in the 1930s. Below the mythology, however, is a portrait of despair and alienation that casts a social commentator's jaundiced eye at this country's love affair with money, greed, sex and power. The insanely violent ending, though tame by today's standards, was extraordinarily controversial. Some critics who panned the film eventually recanted their views on subsequent viewings. A must for any serious collection. Image: Gorgeous transfer, with accurate renditions of the bright Southwestern U.S. summer greens and browns. The widescreen version opens the frame up just like the filmmaker intended. Sound:Fine mono soundtrack. All DVDs are screened on a reference Onkyo DV- S717 third-generation DVD player.
