From 1940s Hollywood noir to 70s cult classics to films by contemporary masters, The Criterion Collection is kicking off the New Year with an exhilarating variety of titles. Joel and Ethan Coen finally enter the collection with “Inside Llewyn Davis,” their critically acclaimed drama set in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the sixties. Another Criterion first-timer: Rita Hayworth sizzles in her most iconic role in Charles Vidor’s unforgettable “Gilda.” And there’s so much more: Wim Wenders pays stylish homage to American crime dramas in “The American Friend,” his adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s “Ripley’s Game,” starring Dennis Hopper; a wronged woman seeks bloody vengeance in the visually remarkable action movies that make up “The Complete Lady Snowblood”; and Italian neorealism meets melodrama in the sultry “Bitter Rice,” starring the gorgeous Silvana Mangano.
