  • Way of the Gun, The Ryan Phillippe and Benicio Del Toro play a pair of career bad guys with no qualms about leaving behind a field of corpses. Low on cash they decide to donate to a sperm bank, overhearing a conversation about a soon-to-be-a-millionaire surrogate mother (Juliette Lewis). It's not until after they kidnap her that it's revealed that she's been hired as the child-bearer for an aging underworld bagman and his wife, and soon the trio is on the run -- from Lewis' bodyguards, as well as a pair of hired hitmen (James Caan and Geoffrey Lewis). Along the way --with plenty of plot twists and turns -- there are rivers of blood and gore, culminating in an even bloodier ending in a Mexican whorehouse. Despite the fact that most every character on the screen is eminently unlikable, the film is incredibly engrossing, with fluid camerawork and fine acting pulling the viewer in to the plot and action. Director and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie scripted "The Usual Suspects." Director: Christopher McQuarrie. Stars: Ryan Phillippe, Benicio Del Toro, Juliette Lewis, Taye Diggs, James Caan, Nicky Katt, Scott Wilson. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: R, 119 min., Thriller, Box office gross: $4.253 million, Artisan Entertainment, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date. 3 stars

  • Hollow Man Special effects-laden update of H.G. Wells' the "Invisible Man" story, here with Kevin Bacon as a scientist working on a secret government project who injects himself with an invisibility serum and goes on a killing rampage. Elisabeth Shue plays his ex-lover. A weak outing from director Paul ("Total Recall," "Starship Troopers") Verhoeven. Director: Paul Verhoeven. Stars: Elisabeth Shue, Kevin Bacon, Josh Brolin, Kim Dickens, Greg Grunberg, William Devane. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: R, 114 min., Science Fiction, Box office gross: $72.476 million, Columbia TriStar, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date. 2 stars

  • Crime + Punishment in Suburbia Thriller about a cheerleader who engineers the murder of her abusive stepfather. Unfortunately, her mother arrives at the murder scene and is pegged for the crime. Will the young girl do the right thing or allow her mother to take the fall? Loosely based on Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment." Director: Rob Schmidt. Stars: Monica Keena, Vincent Kartheiser, Jeffrey Wright, Michael Ironside, Ellen Barkin. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: R, 98 min., Thriller, Box office gross: $26.934 million, MGM, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date. 2 stars

  • Under Suspicion Claustrophobic drama, set in Puerto Rico, about a police captain (Morgan Freeman) who asks his old friend, a prominent tax attorney (Gene Hackman) in for a short interview, which eventually lasts several hours, to discuss the murder of two young girls. Is he a witness? A suspect? Plenty of flashbacks and plot twists. Based on the French film "Garde a Vue" but not nearly as engrossing. Director: Stephen Hopkins. Stars: Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Monica Bellucci, Thomas Jane. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: R, 110 min., Drama, Box office gross: $0.248 million, Columbia TriStar, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date. 2 stars

  • Autumn in New York Love Story for the 21st century, with Richard Gere starring as a love-em-and-leave-em bachelor who meets his match in Winona Ryder. The one-night stand blossoms to a May-December romance with a hitch -- she is fatally ill. Bring out the hankies. Director: Joan Chen. Stars: Richard Gere, Winona Ryder, Anthony LaPaglia, Elaine Stritch, Sherry Stringfield, Mary Beth Hurt. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 105 min., Romantic Drama, Box office gross: $32.000 million, MGM, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date. 2 stars

  • Yellow It's high school graduation night in L.A. and eight young Asian-American teens make plans for the big night. But those plans are changed when one of their friend's father's convenience store is robbed of $1,500. The friends rally in support and go on a wild evening to replace the money -- by any means. Director: Chris Chan Lee. Stars: Soon-Tek Oh, Amy Hill, Michael Chung. 1998, CC, MPAA rating: NR, 90 min., Drama, Vanguard Cinema, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: No.

January 9
  • Me, Myself & Irene It's a two-man show for rubber-limbed Jim Carrey as he plays a state trooper (Charlie) with a long history of abuse -- of being abused, that is -- by his ex-wife and others. When he finally snaps and has a nervous breakdown, he develops a split personality, becoming Hank, a swaggering, sex-obsessed alter ego. About to lose his job, he gets one last assignment -- escort hit-and-run suspect Irene (Renee Zellweger) to court. Naturally things get out of hand -- what with in-the-same body fights (as both personalities fall for Irene), a case of misidentification (the police think that Hank has killed Charlie and kidnapped Irene) and loads of the Farrelly brothers' bathroom humor. Director: Bobby and Peter Farrelly. Stars: Jim Carrey, Renee Zellweger, Anthony Anderson, Chris Cooper, Robert Forster. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: R, 120 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $89.829 million, Fox, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: January 23. 2 stars

  • Claire Dolan Claire Dolan (Katrin Cartlidge) is an Irish immigrant who works -- and works hard -- as a mid-priced call girl in Manhattan to pay off the ever-rising debt to her pimp (Colm Meaney). When her mother dies in a nursing home, she tries to extricate herself from her life, starts a relationship with a cab driver (Vincent D'Onofrio), even moving to Newark. But she can't really make the escape. A riveting, gritty film by the director of "Clean, Shaven," that breaks Hollywood's stereotypes about hookers. Director: Lodge Kerrigan. Stars: Katrin Cartlidge, Vincent D'Onofrio, Colm Meaney. 1998, CC, MPAA rating: NR, 95 min., Drama, New Yorker, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date. 4 stars

  • Once Upon a Time in China Set in 19th century China, this martial arts actioner stars Jet Li as Wong Fei-hung, leader of a misfit militia out to stop the Western slave trade that serves the California gold fields. Director: Hark Tsui. Stars: Jet Li. 1997, CC, MPAA rating: R, 100 min., Martial Arts, Columbia TriStar, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date.

  • Animal Factory Grueling drama about a first-time felon's initiation into the brutal world of prison life. Edward Furlong plays the drug-dealing novice, taken under the wing of veteran convict Willem Dafoe. An excellent second outing for Steve Buscemi, with a fine score by John Lurie. Heads-up co-starring roles by Seymour Cassel, Tom Arnold and John Heard, as well as fine bits by Buscemi and Mickey Rourke. Director: Steve Buscemi. Stars: Edward Furlong, Willem Dafoe, Seymour Cassel, Tom Arnold, John Heard, Steve Buscemi, Mickey Rourke. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: R, 94 min., Drama, Columbia TriStar, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date. 3 stars

January 16
  • Coyote Ugly Based on a CQ magazine article about a New York bar run by women, this jumpin' romantic comedy-drama stars Piper Perabo (last seen in "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle") as an aspiring songwriter who moves to NY to make her fortune but instead falls on hard times, getting a job at Coyote Ugly, a bar run by a horde of sexy, strong and talented women. It's kind of a cross between "Cocktail" and "Flashdance" (which, of course, started the career of Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced this opus on sweat and behind-the-bar moves). Director: David McNally. Stars: Piper Perabo, Adam Garcia, Maria Bello, Melanie Lynsky, Tyra Banks, John Goodman, Bridget Moynahan. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 105 min., Drama with music, Box office gross: $57.810 million, Buena Vista, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date. 3 stars

  • Disney's The Kid Delightful -- if somewhat sentimental -- fairy tale of a story about a Type A image consultant (Bruce Willis) who -- through some quirk of time -- suddenly comes face to face with the 8-year-old boy he used to be. The boy's first gripe about his future life: "I grow up to be a guy with no dog? What a loser I become." For his part, the harried 40-year-old has trouble coming to grips with the boy he used to be and that he's tried to forget -- overweight, insecure and weak. The two eventually help each other to come to grips with both the past and present, paving the way for a much better future. A fine family film -- though the time warping may confuse younger viewers. Director: Jon Turteltaub. Stars: Bruce Willis, Spencer Breslin, Emily Mortimer, Lily Tomlin, Jean Smart, Chi McBride. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: PG, 102 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $68.034 million, Buena Vista, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date. 3 stars

  • Battlefield Earth John Travolta took some chances with this project: not only was he instrumental in bringing to the big screen L. Ron Hubbard's 1982 1,050 page book of the same name (one of the best-selling sci-fi novels of all time) but he opted to play the chief villain of the tale. The roll of the dice didn't favor Travolta: both the film -- a cross between "Red Dawn" and "Star Wars" about a human revolt in the year 3000 against conquering, 9-foot-tall Psychlos from another planet -- and his role garnered deprecating reviews. Ignore the weak reviews: the film is highly enjoyable, with spectacular -- and realistic -- special effects (one we've never seen before: the distortion of air by the heat of rocket ship engines). You'll have to ignore some silly dialogue and some stilted acting (and several plot loopholes) to get to the meat of the matter: the indomitable spirit of freedom and the destruction brought about by capitalist greed. Director: Roger Christian. Stars: John Travolta, Barry Pepper, Forest Whitaker, Kim Coates, Richard Tyson, Sabine Karsenti. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 116 min., Science Fiction, Box office gross: $21.471 million, Warner, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date. 2 stars

Director: Richard Clabuagh. Stars: Robert Englund, Casper Van Diem, Wil Wheaton. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: R, 100 min., Horror, Fox, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date.

  • Nuremberg Turner TV miniseries about the Nuremberg war crime trials of 21 members of the Nazi high command. Stars: Alec Baldwin, Jill Hennessy, Christopher Plummer, Brian Cox, Max Von Sydow. 2000, CC, MPAA rating: NR, 179 min., Drama, Warner, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date.

  • Thrill Seekers Time travel thriller about a reporter who discovers that, in news photos of the most catastrophic disasters in history, the likeness of the same man appears. When the man shows up on the reporter's next airplane flight, the reporter hijacks the plane to prevent a crash, changing the future. When two assassins from the future appear to kill him, the reporter must do some time traveling himself to prevent the next disaster. Stars: Casper Van Dien, Catherine Bell, Martin Sheen, Catherine Oxenberg. 2000, CC, Science Fiction, York/Maverick, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date.

  • Easier Said A young book editor in Manhattan gives up his fast life for a chance to move to the Colorado Rockies where he can write the "Great American Novel." Stars: Bo Clancey, Tricia Gregory, Alex McLeod. 1999, CC, MPAA rating: R, Comedy, Buena Vista, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: No.

  • Starry Night Romantic fantasy has Vincent van Gogh returning to life in modern-day Los Angeles, a century after his death, and becoming awestruck to learn that he is considered one of the world's greatest artists. But no one believes that he's who he says he is (would you?) and he devises a way to give the proceeds from his masterworks to struggling artists (like he once was). The only problem: he has to steal them from greedy, rich art collectors. Along the way he falls for a talented art student. Direct-to-video. Director: Paul Davids. Stars: Sally Kirkland, Abbott Alexander, Lisa Waltz, Lou Wagner, Brian Dillinger. 1999, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 98 min., Fantasy, Universal, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: January 30.

  • Better Tomorrow, A This suave gangster drama, though rarely seen in the States, put John Woo on the directorial map. Woo's sense of cinematic style and action -- fast takes, heart-stopping shoot-outs, swooping camera-- is tempered by a tenderness (further refined in "Hard Boiled") that is sorely lacking in his American outings. "Better" follows the trials and tribulations of two brothers -- one a cop, the other a Hong Kong gangster involved in counterfeiting -- as they struggle with loyalty, trust and honor in a violent underworld subculture. Director: John Woo. Stars: Chow Yun-Fat, Leslie Cheung, Emily Chu, Ti Lung. 1986, CC, MPAA rating: NR, 94 min., Action, Anchor Bay, $9.99 VHS SRP. DVD: Day & Date. 4 stars

  • Better Tomorrow II, A More trials and tribulations of two brothers -- one a cop, the other a Hong Kong gangster -- and their lives in the seamy Hong Kong underworld. When the gangster is arrested, the cop loses face and disowns his brother, despite the latter's attempts at redemption on release from prison. The sequel takes off from the original, with even more action and stylistic shootouts, as the two brothers eventually make amends and seek revenge on the gang that almost destroyed their lives. Director: John Woo. Stars: Chow Yun-Fat, Leslie Cheung, Ti Lung, Dean Shek. 1987, CC, MPAA rating: NR, 104 min., Thriller, Anchor Bay, $9.99 VHS SRP. DVD: Day & Date. 4 stars
